Tottenham Hotspur urged to move for Leon Goretzka
Journalist John Wenham believes Tottenham should target German international Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich. Wenham claims that Tottenham should use their transfer budget wisely this summer, according to Tottenham Hotspur News.
The re-signing of Gareth Bale from Real Madrid in 2020 was the last high-profile acquisition by the Lilywhites. Since then, the club has primarily made ordinary signings, while other Premier League clubs have continued to bring in marquee players. One of the primary reasons for this has been Tottenham’s financial situation over the past few years.
After the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur has renewed faith in its squad, and Daniel Levy is prepared to bid for any player necessary to strengthen the team. Postecoglou is gearing up for a significant revamp at the club, linking Tottenham with various players based on his strategic plans.
John Wenham has suggested that the club should aim for Goretzka in a summer transfer from Bayern Munich, as the German club is reportedly planning to sell the German ahead of the new season.
The 29-year-old midfielder has been a ‘midfield engine’ for Bayern Munich since his arrival in 2018. Goretzka has played a pivotal role in securing five Bundesliga titles for the club. His aggressive nature, passing ability, and pace have been instrumental in Bayern’s success in numerous big games, including their 2020 Champions League victory.
The German international has scored six goals and 11 assists from 42 games across all competitions for Bayern in the last campaign. The player can also play in multiple positions in the midfield department, most of the time, he takes on the attacking midfielder role and switches to defensive midfielder when the team plays defensive tactics.
“Goretzka is a player who has been written off left, right, and centre, So, it just makes me think, why can’t we target that calibre of player? Especially when it looks as if Bayern want to get rid of him.”
Wenham responded to Tottenham Hotspur News. Tottenham lacks an experienced, high-profile player in the squad. If Levy can bag the German international in the summer, Spurs will have a higher chance of winning silverware in the upcoming campaign.

The midfielder would also be a good replacement for Rodrigo Bentancur, who has recently been embroiled in controversy regarding comments made about skipper Son Heung-min. Whether this impacts Bentancur’s future in North London is debatable. However, regardless of Bentancur’s situation, Goretzka would be an excellent addition to Postecoglou’s roster.
Goretzka’s experience, versatility, and proven track record in high-stakes matches make him a valuable asset for any team. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively aligns well with Postecoglou’s vision for a dynamic and resilient midfield. Bringing in Goretzka could also provide stability and leadership, qualities that would be particularly beneficial in the wake of any potential midfield reshuffling.
