Tottenham set their sights on Spanish goalkeeper Joan Garcia
Tottenham are gearing up to sign Spanish goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol in the summer, The custodian has been selected for the Spanish national team for the Paris Olympics 2024.
The 23-year-old Spanish goalkeeper is living his dream, as he was named in Spain’s Olympic squad and assisted in elevating his club to the La Liga. In his 21 club appearances, the Espanyol custodian only gave up 10 goals and recorded 12 clean sheets across all competitions in the last campaign. Many teams, including Tottenham, are vying for his signing after his incredible campaign in the Spanish second-division league.
Spurs had some crucial changes in goal after Ange Postecoglou’s appointment. The Australian gaffer replaced the 12 years-experienced Spurs’ then-captain Hugo Lloris with Italian custodian Guglielmo Vicario. The Italian had a gripping performance in the goal line and therefore, it paved the way for Lloris to leave the North London club.
Ange has three other goalkeeping options other than Vicario in the squad including Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman. Among the three, only 36-year-old Foster has experience of appearing in the League and also only has one year left with the club. So Spurs need to fortify the goalkeeper list by adding an experienced stopper to the club.
Garcia might be the Spurs’ best choice to bolster the squad. The Spaniard’s experience can help the club in the Europa League matches and provide competition to Vicario who conceded 61 goals in the last premier league.
Spurs are expecting a challenge in acquiring the Espanyol goalkeeper’s signature, as the London rivals Arsenal and European champions Real Madrid are keen on signing the custodian. The North London club hasn’t proposed any official bid for the player and Garcia, who has a long deal with Espanyol that expires in 2028, may decide to stay there now that the team has made it to La Liga.
The Spanish team has made it clear that they will only accept offers beyond €25m, per AS. It is also questionable whether the Lillywhites will offer a price above €25m or they’ll look for other options in the summer transfer.
