Tottenham declared favourites to sign LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David for bargain fee

Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs Youtube channel, renowned journalist Ben Jacobs has named Tottenham Hotspur as favourites to sign highly talented Canadian striker Jonathan David this summer.

The 24-year-old striker currently on Copa America duty with Canada at Copa America 2024 is one of the most impressive #9 talents going around in European football. His exploits over the past few seasons for LOSC Lille have caught the eye of top clubs around Europe.

David joined the Ligue 1 side in 2020 and quickly established himself as the lynchpin in attack. In 183 appearances for the French side across all competitions, the striker has scored 84 goals and provided 18 assists.

Already capped 50 times for his country, David has a wealth of experience behind him and seems ready for the next step in his career. Unlike a few youngsters who seek a big money move after one good season in Europe, the Canadian has waited it out for the better part of four seasons.

Speaking about his future, Ben Jacobs seemed to hint to LWOS that David might be available for a bargain transfer fee

“Yeah, I can see him being a Spurs player. I think Spurs are one of the frontrunners for Jonathan David. There are four Premier League teams that are in the mix – you’ve got Chelsea, even though they’ve signed a couple of young strikers, Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester United.”

“So, Lille were looking at £45 or 50 million a year ago, whereas now, the price is going to be under £30 million, and with the right structure, it might even be closer to £20 million, and that’s an astonishing bit of business for any club for, as you say, a striker that scored 26 goals in all competitions in the last two seasons.”

The only reason David could be available for such a meagre transfer fee is the fact that he has less than 12 months left on his existing contract with Lille. If the French club don’t cash in on him now, they run the risk of letting him leave for free next summer.

Jonathan David would be an excellent addition for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to sign a replacement for Harry Kane since the club legend left for Bayern Munich last summer. Ange Postecoglou handled the situation smartly but they cannot afford to go into another season without a natural number nine.

If Jonathan David decides to sign for Spurs, comparisons to Kane will almost be inevitable. However, if there is anyone who can handle those lofty comparisons, it has to be the Canadian marksman.

At the fee that Jacobs believes Lille will ask for David, this is a no-brainer for Spurs. A player of this quality doesn’t come around this often, especially at this fee. Let’s hope we can pip the competitors to his signing.
