Troy Parrott explains why he left Tottenham Hotspur for AZ Alkmaar
Speaking to VI.nl, Troy Parrott has explained why he chose to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Eredivisie side AK Alkmaar, having spent last season on loan in the Dutch league.
Parrott, who spent a significant chunk of his time with Spurs’ academy having joined Tottenham Yth in 2017, was widely regarded as one of the best strikers coming out of the North London club’s academy.
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan with Excelsior and emerged as a cult hero for the club. In 32 games across all competitions, Parrott scored 17 goals and provided five assists, exhibiting his innate goalscoring potential.
The 23-cap Irish international has a truckload of experience despite his relatively short career and would be an excellent addition to Alkmaar. In fact, it begs the question as to why Parrott was not given more game time at North London.
Despite Tottenham not having a number nine in the squad after Harry Kane’s exit from Bayern Munich, Ange Postecoglou did not place trust in Parrott, allowing him to leave on loan. If it wasn’t last season, it seemed to be never.
Talking about his decision to move to the Eredivisie, here is what the 22-year-old number nine had to say
“Before I signed here I heard a lot of good stories about AZ and I spoke to Kenzo Goudmijn, among others, who I became friends with when I played with him. I think AZ is the perfect club for me to take the next steps in my development. I will take the useful experience from last year with me. It helps me that I already played in the Netherlands last season and am therefore used to the competition and life here.”
It’s not a huge surprise that Parrott did not get much game time at Tottenham before last season. However, under a manager like Ange Postecoglou, one would have expected the striker to get a run in the team.
Sadly, despite Spurs spending a lot of years on his development, they will have to let him go in search of pastures new. It’s always a good feeling to see academy players succeed in the first team but this isn’t one of those stories.
