Tottenham are obsessed with signing Canadian striker Jonathan David
According to Pete O’Rourke speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are obsessed with signing talented Canadian striker Jonathan David from LOSC Lille, pipping the likes of Manchester United.
David has been a name doing the rounds with regards to Tottenham ever since the transfer window started. The 24-year-old North American striker might be the answer to Tottenham’s number nine pursuit.
Ever since Harry Kane left the club last summer to join Bayern Munich in pursuit of trophies (which still hasn’t happened), Tottenham have lacked a natural number nine profile in the squad. This summer, they will have to bring in a striker.
It was okay last season when Ange Postecoglou managed to make his team work without a natural number nine but we saw towards the end of the season that Spurs were failing to convert the chances they were creating.
What Tottenham need is a goalscorer. Expecting him to replicate the numbers of Kane at the N17 might be outlandish but what they need is someone with a goalscoring intent. Jonathan David perfectly fits the bill.
According to O’Rourke, Spurs are obsessed with signing the Ligue 1 talisman and are looking to pip Premier League rivals to his signature. Former Newcastle defender told the following to journalist Harry De Cosemo about the 24-year-old:
“Very good finisher, but in the red of Canada he’s been a bit hesitant in front of goal. He’s doing a lot of work off the ball as well, he’s a real team player, Jonathan David. He’s one of the best defensive forwards I’ve ever worked with. The cut-off, the easy passes into midfield and things like that are outstanding.”
Having spent quite a few seasons with French side LOSC Lille, David put up remarkable numbers which has understandably caught the eye. The 24-year-old scored 26 goals and provided nine assists across all competitions in 47 total appearances.
If Tottenham manage to convince David to come to the N17, they would arguably be getting the best striker young enough but with the experience to fill the gigantic boots left behind by the English captain.
