James Maddison and Bryan Gil among the ones congratulating Giovani Lo Celso after Copa América 2024 win
Spurs midfielder Giovani Lo Celso received the plaudits of his club teammates James Maddison and Bryan Gil after the Argentina international picked up his Copa América 2024 medal on Sunday.
The 28-year-old did not start the final against Colombia, though he did come on to the pitch in extra time to great effect as he provided the assist for the only goal after the game: a 112th-minute strike from fellow substitute Lautaro Martínez that sealed the deal for the Albiceleste.
After the game, Lo Celso took to Instagram to post a photo of himself with the trophy.
Gil and Maddison congratulated him in the comments of this post.
All three Spurs players had a trying 2023/24 campaign. While Lo Celso only made 24 appearances across all competitions, delivering two goals and assists each, Gil was given only 12 appearances by Ange Postecoglou in his debut season. Maddison, who was flying at the start of the season, fell off rather drastically in the second half, eventually also losing his place in the England senior team setup.
Crucial summer ahead for all three
Postecoglou has not yet made clear as to what he intends to do with Gil and Lo Celso. With Maddison, at least, we know he’ll get chances in the beginning to prove his worth again.
Lo Celso’s performance in the Copa América final here will certainly open roads for him in the interim, be it at Spurs or elsewhere.

We all know what a shrewd operator Daniel Levy is. If he sees a half-good deal for the Argentine coming his way, which is very likely, we know he will pounce on it.
