Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has made Chelsea star Conor Gallagher one of his summer’s top targets
According to a report from The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur are set to table a new bid for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.
The Lilywhites added young Archie Gray from Leeds United earlier this summer transfer window with Timo Werner extending his loan spell from RB Leipzig. Swedish talent Lucas Bergvall has also officially joined Tottenham Hotspur after an £8.5million move from Djurgarden in February, taking the No.15 shirt ahead of his debut season.
Gray and Bergvall are more prospects than readymade players who can make an immediate impact on Tottenham’s XI, and as a result, gaffer Ange Postecoglou is aiming to bring in an experienced fresh face to north London. He has made Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher one of his top midfield targets, with Spurs set to bid for him imminently.
According to the aforementioned report, Tottenham are set to intensify their efforts in signing Gallagher with a bid now that he has concluded his international commitments with England at the Euro 2024. The midfielder did not cover himself in glory for Gareth Southgate’s side.
The central midfielder was one of Chelsea’s rare bright spots in an otherwise disappointing 2023/24 campaign, netting seven goals and supplying nine assists in 50 appearances across all competitions. He became a mainstay in the Blues’ XI under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, but with Enzo Maresca succeeding the Argentinean at the helm earlier in the summer, the 24-year-old’s future is uncertain.
Gallagher has entered the final 12 months of his contract (Transfermarkt) and the Pensioners are understood to have held talks over an extension. However, the England international’s wage demands are higher than what Chelsea are ready to pay. With his contract expiring next summer, they may be forced to sell him to balance the books and stay on the right side of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Spurs could take advantage of the 24-year-old’s situation and entice him to N17, although Chelsea value him at between £40m to £50m. Despite his contract winding down, the high price tag of Gallagher is perhaps down to an appreciation that his value has risen due to his form for club and country. Nonetheless, the report adds Spurs are confident of wrapping up a deal for around £30m but must make sales of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal to fund a move for the Chelsea star.

Hojbjerg and Emerson aren’t part of Postecoglou’s plans going forward with the club hoping to sell the duo this summer amid interest from AC Milan. We must look to offload them quickly and re-invest the money in Gallagher’s acquisition to strengthen our midfield department.
Now a proven Premier League commodity, Gallagher can make a huge difference at both ends of the pitch for Spurs while trimming the overall age of the squad. Due to his bundles of energy, work rate, pressing and goalscoring ability, he would be a fantastic fit in Postecoglou’s system. That being said, it will be interesting to see what will be our opening offer for the Chelsea star.
