Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has ‘no idea’ about England job links
Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has played down links with the England managerial job following Gareth Southgate’s departure.
Gareth Southgate resigned earlier this week, 48 hours after England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, Germany. The Football Association is on the hunt for a new England manager after Southgate’s eight-year spell at the helm came to a sad end.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Ange Postecoglou has emerged as one of the potential candidates to replace Southgate as the new England boss. According to the Telegraph, the Australian-Greek tactician has been tracked by the FA for years, with technical director John McDermott, who is in charge of appointing Southgate’s successor, an admirer of his attacking and pressing style of football with the Australian national team, Yokohama F. Marinos, Celtic and now Tottenham.
However, Postecoglou has “no idea” about the reports linking him with the vacant Three Lions job, insisting he is only focused on his job at Tottenham.
“I am at the start of pre-season and am the Tottenham manager, so I have got nothing else [on my mind] but trying to bring success to this football club,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports News after his side beat Scottish club Heart of Midlothian 5-1 in a friendly in Edinburgh on Wednesday. “Until I do that, there is no point in me thinking about anything else. I had a nap this afternoon, so I have no idea what is going on [with the speculation].”
Postecoglou took over at Tottenham at the start of last season and guided them to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League, providing the fans plenty of excitement and joy with his attacking and high-octane style of football. A glut of injuries and suspensions led to the north London club missing out on Champions League qualification, although guiding them to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League in his first season in English football should be considered a success.
The 58-year-old will look to build on a strong debut campaign, having already laid the foundations with his attitude, philosophy and recruitment. He wants to win football games with the high risk-high reward idea—a complete change for Spurs faithful after years of insipid football under the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

So, Postecoglou pouring cold water on links with the England job should be music to the ears of Spurs fans. His statement about “bringing success” also says how committed the ex-Celtic tactician is to our club.
Now, CEO Daniel Levy only needs to back Big Ange wholeheartedly in the transfer market to enjoy another successful season domestically and in Europe, where hopefully we manage to end our long trophy drought.
