Early pre-season boost for Maddison as Spurs cruise to victory
James Maddison comes into the ongoing pre-season under pressure as he prepares to grow his influence at Tottenham Hotspur. And looking to replicate the start that the North Londoners enjoyed last season, they have already started training ahead of their new Premier League campaign.
Ange Postecoglou has already seen his side put in a comfortable display as Spurs pulled a 5-1 win over Scottish Premiership side Hearts yesterday.
The game saw the return of some familiar faces, including Djed Spence in Lilywhites colours.
But after Maddison was axed from the Three Lions squad for the European Championship, he would be hungry to get back on the pitch and prove his credentials. However, his absence from the flight to Germany is a blessing in disguise for Tottenham, as he can return for pre-season from the get-go.
All the players involved in the later stages of the Copa America and European Championship would not return to action until the final weeks of the preseason. Madison would be looking to take advantage of the early pre-season, complemented by the rest he received throughout the summer.
Maddison praises Johnson after Hearts win
Alongside former Leicester City maestro Brennan Johnson, he would also be looking to have a solid upcoming campaign. The former Nottingham ace opened the scoring against the Hearts and got the Lilywhites pre-season underway.
Following the game, Madison took to Instagram to comment on Brennan Johnson’s display yesterday. ‘Good start to pre-season,’ wrote the midfielder while posting a clip of Brennan Johnson’s opening goal. He added this with a handshake emoji.
