Tottenham optimistic about landing Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres for less than his release clause
According to a report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham Hotspur have been given a boost in their pursuit of Sporting CP marksman Viktor Gyokeres.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is keen to strengthen his squad further after the acquisitions of highly-rated Archie Gray from Leeds United and Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig. Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall has also officially joined the north Londoners after an agreement over a £8.5million deal from Djurgarden was reached earlier this year.
Tottenham Hotspur are set to ramp up their transfer business now that Euro 2024 and the Copa America have come to an end. Having extended Werner’s loan deal from RB Leipzig, Ange Postecoglou is now keen to reinforce his striker options ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
The aforementioned report claims that Tottenham are growing confident about landing Viktor Gyokeres for a cut-price fee from Sporting CP this summer. Gyokeres joined Sporting CP from Championship side Coventry City for a club-record transfer worth €20 million, signing a five-year deal last summer. It was then a mammoth £ 84 million release clause inserted in his Sporting contract.
However, Spurs may not have to splash such an outlandish figure to sign the Sweden international. The north London side could make a surprise attempt to sign Gyokeres if they are given assurances that he can be acquired at a cut-price fee this summer, the report adds.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a remarkable debut season in Portugal, scoring 43 goals and providing 15 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions as Ruben Amorim’s side won the league title. He was Primeira Liga’s best striker by a country mile, scoring goals left, right and centre as well as creating chances aplenty for his teammates in Sporting colours.
Gyokeres, who is not “a typical target man” as per former Watford and West Ham United coach Slaven Bilic, may be tempted to move back to England after guiding Sporting to Champions League qualification. Despite spending six seasons in British football, he never managed a Premier League appearance during his time with Brighton and Hove Albion which Spurs must tap into while convincing him to join Postecoglou’s forces.
Going purely by his goal contributions last season, the big Swede would be an instant upgrade on the inconsistent Richarlison. Spurs could easily do with adding more firepower as they cannot be reliant on Son Heung-min and Richarlison for goals in the upcoming season, especially with the club set to be involved in Europe once again.

Gyokeres would be a fantastic fit for the Lilywhites due to his movement, flair, physicality and goalscoring ability. That being said, Spurs must try to test Sporting’s resolve with a cheeky bid for the 26-year-old, who has the required attributes to blossom in the Premier League.
