Spurs miss out on Nikola Milenković, who is Nottingham Forest-bound

As confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur have missed out on Serbian defender Nikola Milenković, who is on his way to fellow Premier League club Nottingham Forest on the back of a bargain £12m move. Spurs’ interest in the defender has been prevalent for some time now.

The Serbia international, seen recently representing his country at UEFA Euro 2024, is leaving Serie A side Fiorentina after seven years.

Romano gave his characteristic “here we go” seal of approval to Milenković’s Forest yesterday.

Despite being only 26, Milenković is entering his tenth season as a senior pro, having started in 2015 for Partizan Belgrade, from where he moved to Florence in 2017.

Spurs, looking for defensive reinforcements to complement Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, were linked with Milenković for weeks but have been beaten to the bargain deal by Forest, who had another relegation-threatened season in the Premier League last time round.

Milenković’s contract at Fiorentina, which was set to run until June 2027, made him the highest-paid player at the club, fetching him €5.56 million every year.

Milenković made 264 appearances for Fiorentina.

Got to go again

With the kind of price he was available for, and given the talent and experience he would have offered despite his age, there is no doubt Spurs have missed out on quite a coup by not being able to land Milenković.

Whether the trigger-happy Forest team we know and love will be able to help his reputation in England or not, only time will tell. Spurs, however, need to move quickly on to other targets.
