Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min is on the radar of Saudi Arabian clubs
According to a report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham Hotspur are set to keep hold of skipper Son Heung-min this summer amid interest from Saudi Arabia.
The South Korea international joined Tottenham Hotspur from Bayer Leverkusen back in the summer of 2015 for £22 million. He has played over 400 times for the North London club thus far, bagging 162 goals and supplying 84 assists over the years while becoming a fan favourite.
Following Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich last summer, Son Heung-min was appointed the new club captain by our gaffer Ange Postecoglou. And he led the team very well, helping Spurs qualify for the Europa League. The 32-year-old was the club’s top scorer with 17 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions this past campaign and also played in various attacking positions under Ange Postecoglou.
However, Son has entered the final year of his contract (Transfermarkt) at Spurs which has made him an ‘ambitious target’ for the Saudi Pro League clubs. Saudi club Al-Ahli remain keen on the South Korean forward, but they will have to wait longer as Spurs are in no mood to cash in on their club legend.
Instead, the aforementioned report says that the North Londoners will activate a one-year extension on his contract, which will prolong our captain’s stay until 2026. The Lilywhites have no interest in letting go of Son this summer and rightly so.
The South Korean, who has been hailed by Postecoglou for holding “high standards” after dislocating his finger back in February, is now the club’s second-most experienced player—behind Ben Davies—after the departures of Kane and Hugo Lloris. He is not getting any younger having turned 32 earlier this month but his performances this past campaign showed that he is now Spurs’ best goalscorer.
Son have may lost a yard of pace or two in the last 15 to 18 months, yet he is still a fantastic option in attack and having such an experienced figure on and off the pitch is often beneficial for the squad. That being said, however, Spurs must sign a clinical striker to slowly phase him out, as Richarlison has been too inconsistent and Alejo Veliz still learning his trade.
