Tottenham are close to a player-plus-cash deal with Aston Villa involving Jacob Ramsey and Giovani Lo Celso
According to a report from Argentinian outlet TyC Sports, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are negotiating a swap deal that would send Giovani Lo Celso plus £19m to the midlands in swap for midfielder Jacob Ramsey.
Spurs have been strongly linked with a move for Jacob Ramsey in recent times. The former England under-21 international is an extremely talented player but is coming off an injury-ravaged season where he only managed 16 Premier League appearances—of which only came as a starter.
A product of the Aston Villa academy, the 23-year-old enjoyed his breakthrough campaign in 2020/21. Ramsey has already played over 120 times for Aston Villa’s senior team, scoring 13 goals and supplying 12 assists. Barring the past campaign, the English midfielder’s performances have been consistent in the Premier League which has caught the attention of Tottenham.
The aforementioned report states that Tottenham are locked in negotiations with Aston Villa and a deal for Ramsey ‘will soon be agreed’. The deal will see Lo Celso move to Villa Park, where he will be reunited with Unai Emery.
Lo Celso has worked with Emery during spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Villarreal. It was his assist that produced Lautaro Martinez’s stoppage-time winner for Argentina against Colombia in the Copa America final in the United States earlier this month.
After failing to establish himself at Spurs since arriving from Real Betis in 2019, the 28-year-old needs a fresh start in his career and joining Villa to work again with Emery would be ideal for him. At Villa, Lo Celso will also join his compatriots Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia.
As far as Tottenham are concerned, Lo Celso has no future under Ange Postecoglou and moving him on is the best option. A potential swap deal would see the Lilywhites get Ramsey—a talented, hardworking, inventive and versatile midfielder who will fit into Ange Postecoglou’s aggressive and pressing system. After last season’s injury struggles, the 23-year-old will be raring to prove himself again and make an immediate impact at Spurs.
Due to Ramsey’s versatility, Postecoglou should be able to use him in various positions across the middle of the park. The ex-England youth international possesses the qualities to make Spurs tick while his addition would undoubtedly improve the squad depth. He also has a knack for scoring goals, as evidenced by his record for Villa.
