Ryan Sessegnon set to re-sign with Fulham confirms Fabrizio Romano
According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ryan Sessegnon is set to re-sign with his boyhood club, Fulham.
This marks the end of a nightmarish five-year stint at Spurs that took the former England U21 international from being one of the hottest prospects in football to the brink of sporting oblivion.
The 24-year-old’s £55k-per-week contract at Spurs came to an end last season.
The young defender rose to fame as a teenager during his time with Fulham in the Championship. He was the centre of attention in the English second tier most prominently in the 2017/18 season, as he delivered 16 goals and 8 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions despite starting at left-wingback, winning for himself in the process the EFL’s Young Player of the Year and Championship Player of the Year awards for the season apart from other individual accolades.
Sessegnon moved to Spurs in the summer of 2019 on the back of a £25m move, but in his five years in North London, he failed to make the jump to the next level and, apart from fleeting phases of brilliance, did not manage to establish himself in the Spurs first team.
All in all, Sessegnon made 57 appearances for Spurs, scoring thrice and assisting four times. Conte even called the player ‘reliable’ during his time here as the coach.
A tough but necessary call
It’s always sad when a promising young player fails to do in the big time what they showed in their early days. The upheaval at Spurs made it very hard for Sessegnon to grow, and one can only wish him the very best and hope he manages to regain some of the form at Fulham that he showed in his teenage days.
