James Maddison wants to end Spurs’ trophy drought this season
In a recent interview, Spurs midfielder James Maddison made a bold demand of himself and his teammates ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Speaking ahead of his side’s pre-season friendly against Vissel Kobe on Saturday, the England international had this to say:
“We need to strive to have more than a good season. We want silverware and we want to make history. We’ve benefited from having a year under the manager and now we can kick on.
“Really happy to be here. My first time in Japan. We’ve been very well received and the hotel and training and excited to see the stadium and looking forward to the game.”
As quoted by Football London
Maddison joined Tottenham last summer from Leicester City on the back of a £40m move, having signed a £170k-a-week contract running until June 2028, which also makes him the second-highest earner at the club behind Son Heung-min.
After hitting the ground running early on in the season, Maddison’s form fizzled out in the second half of the season as Spurs themselves lost momentum and failed to chased down a tiring Aston Villa side for the fourth-place Champions League finish in the league.
The 27-year-old finished last season with four goals and nine assists in 30 appearances across all competitions, ultimately failing to make England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Spurs kick off their Premier League campaign against Maddison’s previous club on Monday, August 19.
Big talk, now action needed
Spurs were exciting last season in what was Ange Postecoglou‘s first year in North London.
But, Spurs have been good plenty of times over the past 16 years, which is the length of their much-ridiculed ongoing trophy drought.

Both Postecoglou and Maddison are renowned for bringing freshness to what are otherwise very tiring and formulaic press conferences, but fans love it more when you back your words with actions, which is what the two need to do in the coming season.
