Alasdair Gold pours cold water on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Federico Chiesa
Writing in his column on Football. London, Alasdair Gold, the Tottenham Hotspur correspondent has played down Italy links surrounding a potential move for Federico Chiesa to North London this summer.
Over the past few days, several reports as mentioned by Gold have claimed that Chiesa is closing in on a move to the N17. However, according to the reliable journalist, the club have laughed off such talk.
The Juventus winger is not a primary transfer target for Spurs this summer and would be considered only as a market opportunity later in the window. Currently, signing the 26-year-old who once caught Italian legend Gigi Buffon by surprise is not a realistic option. Here is what the Italian shot-stopper had to say about Chiesa
“When he arrived at Juve I didn’t think he was so good. I am honest. In the European Championship he was unbelievable, in the final match with England, it was impossible to stop him. After a season at Juve with Federico it is no longer a surprise for me, but it was not obvious that he would be able to play at such a high level in a tournament like the European Championship. If you do those things at such a high level, then it means that you are really special.”
Chiesa first broke into the limelight with the entire world with his performances in the Euros 2020, a tournament in which Italy dominated their way to the title. The Juventus winger was arguably one of the side’s most important players.
At that stage, it looked like the world was Chiesa’s oyster and he could go on to become one of the best attackers to have played for his country. It’s safe to say that the Italian has failed to hit such heights in his career.
Injuries have played a crucial unfortunate part in the 26-year-old’s career. He now finds himself out of favour at Juventus under Thiago Motta. His €213,654 per week contract expires next summer and the Old Lady is willing to take a cut and part ways with him.
Speaking about Spurs’ involvement in the transfer though, here is what Alasdair Gold had to write about the 26-year-old potentially moving to the N17
“Take the recent noise around Juventus star Federico Chiesa in Italy. The 26-year-old Italian has plenty of talent but spent a long time out with a cruciate ligament injury. Last season was his first full one back and it was an understandably inconsistent one with just three goals and no assists in Serie A between the end of November and the start of May.”
“So while the links between Tottenham and the versatile Chiesa have been strong and widespread in his homeland, those in and around Spurs have been left non-plussed by the stories with football.london understanding that the player is not believed to be one of Postecoglou’s original targets and therefore there is no truth to the current reports.”
Generally, when players are looking to sort out exits from clubs, we often see agents trying to drum up interest in the player by spreading information about a top club being interested in him. If Gold’s words are indeed accurate, Tottenham may be used as a stalking horse here.

It’s still not clear why Tottenham are not looking at Chiesa. He will be a good addition to the squad at the N17 but Ange Postecoglou seems to think otherwise. We have no reason to doubt the Aussie tactician who has been exceptional with his signings so far.
