Tottenham told to sign Ivan Toney who can make them Premier League contenders
Speaking to TalkSPORT, Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has told Tottenham Hotspur that signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney will make them Premier League contenders for the upcoming season.
The Spurs squad lacks a natural number nine presence. Richarlison might wear that number on his back for the Brazilian attacker is not your archetypal striker. Harry Kane was the last such player in the squad.
Last season, the Three Lions captain left for Bayern Munich and Ange Postecoglou chose not to replace him. The Aussie tactician, with all his experience, would have known that signing a striker would have put immense pressure on him to fill Kane’s shoes.
Although Spurs performed admirably in attack last season, there was a lack of goals compared to the number of chances they created, especially in the latter half of the season. Taking the same risk going into another season might not be a wise choice.
Signing Ivan Toney will give Postecoglou a star striker at his disposal. The Brentford star has been one of the most consistent goalscorers in the Premier League. The added advantage is his creative presence up top.
MacAnthony believes Spurs would become top-3 contenders in the PL and could challenge for the title if they sell Richarlison and sign Toney this summer
“The way Ange [Postecoglou] plays… if you could get rid of Richarlison, who is a one-goal-in-five striker, and put Toney into an Ange team, I think they would have finished top three comfortably last year. It’s not because of the sell-on, people always accuse me of this. I’ve said this before. I think Toney would’ve won Arsenal the title last year. I think he makes Chelsea a completely different team, with all these young players having a figure-head, international, top No.9 up front. And I think he makes an Ange team top three, potentially competing for the title in the last month of the season.”
Ange, like a puzzle master, has been assembling different parts of his jigsaw since he became the head coach last season. One piece of the puzzle that is certainly missing is a Toney-esque profile and Spurs will know that.
Toney might not be as prolific as Kane in front of goal but not many strikers are in the entire world. Of the available options, the 28-year-old is as good as they come and Tottenham must make a serious effort to sign him.
