Tottenham poised to hijack deal for 'priceless' star endorsed by Arsenal legend

Tottenham looking to poach Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher under the noses of Atletico Madrid

According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are planning to hijack Atletico Madrid’s deal for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher with a late move.

The Blues have accepted a bid from Atletico Madrid for Conor Gallagher after he rejected a new contract proposal in June. The two clubs are in advanced talks to sign the England international as Chelsea look to make a huge profit by selling one of their finest Cobham graduates.

However, an agreement with Gallagher has not yet been reached, leaving room for Tottenham to swoop in. The aforementioned report adds the Lilywhites have been interested in the Chelsea midfielder since January and are still in the hunt for his signature, but they could face further competition from Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

Ange Postecoglou appears to be a big admirer of Gallagher, who has been a vital cog for Chelsea ever since returning on loan from Crystal Palace in 2022, scoring 10 goals in 95 appearances for his boyhood club. The Englishman was one of the rare bright sparks in an otherwise torrid 2023/24 campaign for the Pensioners.

The central midfielder, who earns approximately £50,000 per week at Stamford Bridge, was among the most utilized players under former boss Mauricio Pochettino. Due to his pressing, work rate, creativity and movement, Gallagher thrived in an advanced midfield role and delivered the goods consistently for his team last season. Gallagher is not agreeing to a new deal with his boyhood club as he wants more than £150,000 per week.

It is the player’s aforementioned attributes on and off the ball that make him a perfect fit for ‘Ange Ball’. Our gaffer wants his players to press relentlessly, force the opposition to commit mistakes, win the ball higher up the pitch, create chances and score goals. This system is tailor-made for someone like Gallagher to come in and perform, unlike Diego Simeone’s ultra-defensive, counter-attacking tactics at Atletico.

Another key factor that gives Spurs an advantage over Atletico is Gallagher’s preference to stay in London. With personal terms yet to be agreed with Atletico, Tottenham must capitalize on the situation and secure the coveted midfielder’s signature.

There is a window of opportunity for the deal to be hijacked and we must quickly act on it if Postecoglou is desperate to have the 24-year-old workhorse in his ranks. Gallagher would not only improve Spurs’ midfield options but also become a big candidate to don the armband in the future, provided we snatch him under Atletico’s noses.
