Tottenham are considering a move for Lille star Jonathan David
According to a report from CaughtOffside, Tottenham have expressed an interest in signing LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David.
Jonathan David has been a smash hit at Lille since arriving from Belgian club KAA Gent four years ago. The 24-year-old, who represented Canada at the Copa America earlier this summer, has scored 84 goals in 183 matches for the French side. That works out to around 0.46 goals per game. He enjoyed a highly productive 2023/24 season, bagging 35 goal contributions in 47 games across all competitions.
The centre-forward could be one of the bargains of the summer transfer window considering he has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract. The aforementioned report adds Tottenham have made contact with those close to David recently over a possible swoop.
Spurs are in the market for a striker to lead their attack in the 2024/25 campaign. Ever since Harry Kane left the club for Bayern Munich last summer, the Lilywhites have struggled to fill his void in the team. Of course, it is extremely difficult to replace a goal-machine like Kane but the club needs to find someone who can at least consistently supply goals for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Son Heung-min and Richarlison shared the goals up top last season but if Spurs are to go to the next level, they must add an out-and-out No.9 to the squad this summer. David, in that regard, could be a good fit for the North London outfit.
David has proven himself in Ligue 1 and appears to be at the right age to make the step up in his career. The Canada international has the attributes to thrive in Postecoglou’s system, helping Spurs tick with his movement, link-up play and ruthlessness in front of goal.
With creative players such as James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Son in and around him, the 24-year-old can make the north Londoners even more lethal going forward. In addition, David is also a fairly decent playmaker having assisted 18 times in Lille colours.
Spurs’ recent close contact with David is a clear indication of their interest in the player. A potential move to Tottenham from Lille would be a significant upgrade for the North American star.
