Son Heung-min could be back in his preferred position on the left in the upcoming season, provided Spurs sign a striker
According to a report from the Daily Telegraph, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou would like to deploy skipper Son Heung-min on the left flank in the upcoming campaign by signing a recognised striker.
Following Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich last summer, the onus of scoring goals for Tottenham consistently fell on Son Heung-min. And the South Korean duly delivered, netting 17 goals in 35 Premier League appearances. The forward also showed the creative side of his game by supplying 10 assists. The 32-year-old’s last season’s goal contributions took his Tottenham tally to 162 goals and 84 assists in 408 games across all competitions.
In Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge at Tottenham, Son played a mix of games on the left wing and up top. He had plenty of good games in both positions but there were occasions where the forward struggled to find a way through the opposition defences.
After evaluating his performances throughout the last season and perhaps this recently concluded pre-season tour, Postecoglou has decided to use the Spurs skipper as a left-winger rather than centrally. This idea of the Spurs tactician largely hinges on the club signing a new striker in the final month of the transfer window, with Postecoglou seemingly not completely sold on Richarlison as his team’s starting No.9.
Postecoglou confirmed during the club’s tour of South Korea that he would like more options in the striker’s position for the 2024/25 campaign. Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke has been heavily linked with a move to the north London outfit following a 21-goal 2023/24 campaign. In fact, Spurs are keen to make progress on a move for Solanke, who has a £65m release clause in his contract.
The importance of signing a new striker becomes so important here. Should one arrive before the August 30 transfer deadline, it would enable Postecoglou to use Son in his preferred position on the left flank. Son has been the most productive in his Spurs career as a wide forward, and with a new No.9 leading the attack—presumably Solanke—the South Korean star may get back to his best again and deliver the goods.

This would also mean Richarlison and Timo Werner become rotational options off the bench in the forthcoming campaign. Having the duo come on as substitutes as potential game-changers will be excellent as far as Tottenham’s squad depth is concerned, considering the club is set to compete in the Europa League.
All in all, it remains to be seen whether our club can bring in a pure No.9 before the transfer window slams shut.
