Tottenham are close to finalizing Emerson Royal’s sale to AC Milan

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur are close to selling defender Emerson Royal to AC Milan for €15m plus potential add-ons.

The Emerson Royal saga to AC Milan has been going on for weeks and months. The Brazilian has agreed personal terms with AC Milan back in May and is now waiting for the green light from Tottenham to travel to Italy and undergo a medical.

The 25-year-old made it clear earlier this summer that he wanted a move to Milan and agreed personal terms, but the two clubs reaching an agreement over a fee has been a different topic entirely. Speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Emerson’s transfer to Milan will be wrapped up quite soon. The final cost of the operation will be in the ballpark of €15m plus add-ons.

“I expect them (Tottenham) to be busy. definitely. Because for Emerson Royal, there are conversations ongoing with Milan. I think this deal will be done quite soon. They still need some final steps, but the agreement is close around €15 million, plus add-ons. Tottenham started from €20 million,” Romano told GIVEMESPORT.

“So there is no big gap between the two clubs and the player wants to go to Milan. He already agreed on personal terms at the end of May. So, Emerson Royal is basically waiting for the two clubs to agree to travel and complete his medical. So that’s the situation for Emerson.”

Emerson arrived at Spurs from Barcelona in the summer of 2021 as a highly-rated young full-back, off the back of a fine loan spell with Real Betis. There were great expectations from fans and club officials alike for the Brazilian to finally replace Kyle Walker at right-back.

However, it wouldn’t be a stretch to comment that the 25-year-old’s three years in north London have been underwhelming. Emerson’s time at the club has been riddled with inconsistency and mistakes, resulting in him failing to live up to the billing.

Spurs had paid £25.8 million to Barcelona for the full-back’s signature in 2021, so a potential deal with Milan for an initial fee of €15m represents a significant loss on the club’s investment. Given Pedro Porro’s dominant performances that saw him become the undisputed first-choice at right-back under Big Ange, Emerson’s time at the club looked done and dusted heading into the business end of last season itself.

It will be interesting to see whether the Lilywhites hunt for a like-for-like Emerson replacement, although new acquisition Archie Gray may act as an understudy to first-choice right-back Pedro Porro in the upcoming season.

Also, Djed Spence is waiting in the wings. The 23-year-old has spent the last 18 months on loan at three different clubs before returning to N17 earlier this summer. Having impressed Postecoglou and his coaching staff in the pre-season tour of South Korea, there is every chance of Spence getting a look in.

By finding an in-house solution to replace Emerson in the squad, Spurs could actually use the funds from the Brazilian’s potential sale to Milan to buy a new striker.
