Barcelona poised to snatch £53k a week Tottenham star who once called Madrid home

It appears increasingly likely that Sergio Reguilon will not remain a Tottenham Hotspur player beyond this summer transfer window.

The Spanish left-back is surplus to requirements under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham. He was left out of the club’s pre-season tour of South Korea, which was a clear indication that the player doesn’t feature in Ange Postecoglou’s plans moving forward.

Sergio Reguilon has been keen to find a new home after spending the first half of last season on loan at Manchester United and then was farmed out to Brentford during the January transfer window. He has not been short of suitors in the summer transfer window, with Turkish giants Galatasaray expressing an interest in signing the left-back. Sevilla have also looked at re-signing him this month.

Now, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has revealed on his X account that Barcelona have made enquiries about Reguilon. They have been exploring the conditions of a potential deal with just a year left on the 27-year-old’s contract (Transfermarkt) at Spurs.

“Exclusive: #Barcelona have been making inquiries about #Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon,” Thomas tweeted.

“Exploring the conditions of a potential deal with just a year left on his #Spurs contract.”

Reguilon, who moved to England from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020, made 67 Premier League appearances wearing Tottenham colours thus far. He became a peripheral figure at Tottenham as early as last season and, thus, was allowed to leave on loan twice, with Destiny Udogie establishing himself as the first-choice left-back under Postecoglou. Prior to that, the Madrid-born star had also spent time on loan at Atletico Madrid.

Brentford now want Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon after his short-term spell at Manchester United.
Sergio Reguilon has failed to live up to the lofty expectations at Spurs.

As the left-back’s £53k-per-week contract at the Hotspur Way is expiring next June, this is the club’s last chance saloon to get a decent fee from his potential sale. The meteoric rise of Udogie has more or less ended Reguilon’s career in north London. As things stand, it is extremely difficult to see him surpass Udogie in the left-back pecking order.

Barcelona showing interest in the ex-Real Madrid man should come as good news for Spurs, who view the left-back as a sellable commodity this summer. Reguilon doesn’t fit Postecoglou’s system and needs to be moved on from the club’s books as quickly as possible. And for that to happen, the club must set a minimal valuation on his head in order to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer in 2025.

Having said that, however, it is very sad to see a player like Reguilon failing to unlock his true potential having arrived at our club from Real Madrid four summers ago as one of the most exciting left-backs in the game.
