As they continue rebuilding their squad ahead of next season, Spurs have also been very honest with the players they no longer want to continue with them going forward.
Two such players are fullbacks Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilón. While the latter was part of the squad that toured Asia recently, he has been moved on to AC Milan, while Reguilón, having been left out of the squad and told to find new employers, is still at the club.
And both Spurs and Reguilón are running out of time.
Sergio Reguilón desperate to leave Tottenham
As reported by Football Insider, Sergio Reguilón is “desperate” to leave the North London club behind.
Ever since being dropped from the Lilywhites’ pre-season squad, the Spain international has been particular about moving only to a side that will play European football in the coming season.
Most recently, the 27-year-old has been linked with a shock move to Barcelona, who only have one fit out-and-out left-back in their ranks.
A move to the Catalan giants would hit one José Mourinho hard, who once said this about his former player:
“I say, from my perspective too, one of the players that could show that Real Madrid’s traditional desire to compete against Barcelona was a kid like Reguilon, who had a very good approach in both matches.”
Reguilón would also like to stay in the Special One’s good books, having once waxed lyrical about him thusly back in 2020:
“I could tell a thousand wonderful stories about Mourinho.
“On Christmas Day, for example, he knew I was alone. We arrived to train on the 25th at three and I had a box in my place. I opened it and inside was a suckling pig, already cooked.
“He told me: ‘I know you’re alone at Christmas, so you don’t have to cook dinner and you can eat well.’ He pays attention to details that most people wouldn’t know on a day-to-day basis.
“To be so aware of what’s going on in a footballer’s life off the pitch is important.”
In the end, however, Reguilón may not have a choice. Valued by Transfermarkt at €12 million, his £53k-per-week contract at Spurs is set to expire next summer.
Tottenham desperate to offload Sergio Reguilón
Reguilón would not want to sit around and do nothing for one season. Conversely, Spurs would not want to let him leave for free next summer.
However, given they let Eric Dier and Ivan Perišić leave last season on loan only to lose them for free this summer, there is precedence here that tells us that, should they not find a buyer this time round, they might at least consider cutting their loses by having someone else pay the Spaniard’s wages for the season.
