Djed Spence determined to succeed at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham right-back Djed Spence has spent the last 18 months on loan with Rennes, Leeds United and most recently at Genoa. He enjoyed a fantastic spell in Serie A and it looked like the Italian giants were keen on signing him, only for the player to be mistreated and sent back to north London.
In short, the player did not deliver what he was promised as the £6.8 million-rated defender finds himself under Ange Postecoglou. The Australian spoke at length about the youngster and heaped praise on him, speaking the following via Tutto Mercato Web:
“We took him back in pre-season and we’re assessing him on his merits. He’s a Tottenham player. To be fair to him, I think he’s been very, very good for us this pre-season, in terms of the way he’s trained and his general attitude. But a lot of these things are in the hands of the players themselves. They decide their own future, in a lot of ways, and I think Djed is in that boat. I think there’s an opportunity for him here, for sure. In terms of building a team, he’s definitely someone who could contribute with the attributes he has. Last year I thought there was a chance, but it didn’t work out. With these kinds of things, I think sometimes players are really waiting for a direction when they can really take control of their own direction.”
With Emerson Royal about to leave for AC Milan, Spence is bound to be the second-choice right-back at Tottenham behind Ange Postecoglou. The player is also capable of playing as a right midfielder and left-back, which will be an added benefit for Spurs.
Spence would effectively be a new signing for Spurs, who comes in as determined as ever, with his spell in Italy for the last six months likely to prove decisive.
The Serie A is a defensively solid league and the Tottenham right-back is bound to have picked up a few traits while playing for Genoa, who did fairly well last season as they finished 11th while conceding only 45 goals throughout 2023/24.
Spence’s newfound enthusiasm will be particularly welcomed by Postecoglou, who has always emphasized the importance of having players that are willing to put in the hard yards.
The Spurs manager has experience in getting the best out of younger players, primarily at Celtic, and it will be interesting to see how Spence performs under his watchful eyes.
