Tottenham make decision on £80k-a-week star who is a role model to captain Son

Tottenham Hotspur boasts of some top-quality players and extremely talented academy kids and head coach Ange Postecoglou would be looking to ensure that the club keeps the core of the squad.

The Lilywhites have been scouring the market for new talents with high potential that can make a difference immediately as well as in the long term, thus helping Ange Postecoglou to shape the team as per his ideas and ethos. Simultaneously, it is also vital that the club keeps hold of some of the experienced stars to ensure a successful campaign.

With less than 12 months left on his contract at the club, the future of Ben Davies has been up in the air for some time now. However, according to a report from Football Insider, Ben Davies is expected to stay at the club for the upcoming 2024/25 season and set out the final year of his Tottenham contract. (Transfermarkt)

Ange Postecoglou has no problems keeping Ben Davies at the club in the upcoming season

The Wales international came up the ranks at Swansea City and made a name for himself while playing for their first team before making the switch to Tottenham in the summer of 2014. The left-back has been an extremely loyal servant to the north London outfit, featuring in a total of 330 games thus far across 10 seasons.

The 31-year-old managed only 19 appearances in all competitions—including 17 in the Premier League—following the emergence of Destiny Udogie under Postecoglou. Davies’ limited game time, combined with his dwindling contract, suggested that he may be eager to look for fresher pastures after a decade-long stay at Spurs.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case. The aforementioned report adds the versatile Welshman wants to stay at the Hotspur Way beyond the summer and Postecoglou has no issues about keeping the defender with £80,000 per week contract as he is viewed as a valuable squad player.

Despite their requirement to trim the squad and balance the accounts after a relatively expensive summer transfer window, Spurs are inclined towards keeping hold of Davies. The departures of Ryan Sessegnon and Emerson Royal have depleted Postecoglou’s options at full-back, and with the club set to participate in Europe after a year’s absence, the club needs to have a bigger squad than last term.

Davies, who is a role model to skipper Son Heung-min, has been a reliable player for Spurs over the years. His experience and nous make him a decent deputy to Udogie at left-back, while his ability to also operate in central defence adds more value besides the ex-Swansea star’s name.

That being said, Davies staying at Spurs beyond the summer and leaving as a free agent in 2025 isn’t the worst of ideas.
