Tottenham remain outsiders to sign £60m Pep-endorsed star after losing favourite status

In their search for a centre-forward this summer, Tottenham recently went big and beyond as they broke the bank for Dominic Solanke.

However, they remain linked with strikers from all over Europe, expected to rope at least one more in before the transfer window slams shut.

And now, fresh reports have emerged regarding a player they have been linked with all summer.

Ivan Toney moving to Tottenham an outside possibility

Tottenham remain an “outside option” for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, as reported by The Independent, with the Bees not willing to part with him for less than £60 million.

Toney has been linked with a move away from Brentford all summer, having been looking for a move to a bigger club well before that.

Brentford’s reinvigorated stance regarding their asking price for Toney can be accredited to the knee injury of their new signing Igor Thiago, who is out until the start of 2025.

Toney’s £20k-a-week contract at Brentford expires next summer.

The England international is a highly-regarded forward and received high praise from Pep Guardiola earlier this year.

“He’s an exceptional player. Not just with the long balls, with keeping (the ball) and set-pieces, with the penalties as a guarantee.

“For many things they can link with him and he’s an extraordinary player.

“I’m so happy he is back and hopefully that period is forgotten in his life and for his family. Exceptional players always are more than welcome in the Premier League.”

Guardiola on Toney, as quoted by beIN Sports.
Toney's Premier League record: 85 appearances, 36 goals, 11 assists.

Not for that price

Spurs have already filled in their quota of first-choice centre-forward with their record signing of Solanke. This was remarkable enough given Daniel Levy’s track record, so it’s hard to even imagine that they would entertain spending north of £50 million for another player this summer, let alone a player in the final year of his contract who has wanted a big move for over a season.

The Cherries are unlikely to receive a £60m offer from any of Toney’s suitors, so it’s a game of desperation for all parties involved as we reach the end of this summer’s transfer window.

Staying his final year at Brentford, producing an enviable goal tally, and then moving on for free next summer with an even bumpier contract would be a pretty sweet deal for the Englishman.
