Tottenham discipline £55k-a-week midfielder over off-field behavior

Tottenham have suspended Yves Bissouma for the first game of the 2024/25 season due to off-field actions

Dominic Solanke’s addition has added spark in the Spurs’ attacking ranks while giving head coach Ange Postecoglou a much-needed presence up top which he lacked at times last season. It is a big boost to have the English striker, who will compete with Son Heung-min and Richarlison up front.

On the contrary, Tottenham have been hit with an expected blow ahead of their season-opener against Leicester City on Monday night. According to a report from BBC, Spurs have suspended Yves Bissouma for their first game of the 2024/25 Premier League after the central midfielder posted footage on social media of himself inhaling laughing gas.

The Mali international apologised after clips emerged of him inhaling the toxic Nitrous Oxide, saying it “was a severe lack of judgement.” While he deleted the video from his Snapchat account hours later, Tottenham decided to take strict action against him.

To simplify things, possession of laughing gas—also known as nitrous oxide—for recreational purposes has been punished with a two-year prison sentence in the United Kingdom since 2023. Head coach Ange Postecoglou also shed light on this serious matter involving Yves Bissouma.

“We’ve suspended him (Bissouma) from Monday’s game,” said Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.

“Beyond that, there’s also some trust-building that needs to happen between Biss and me, as well as Biss and the group. That’s what he needs to work hard at from now on – to try to win that back. He’s going to have to earn that.

“The door is open for him and, hopefully, we can help him realise the decisions he makes impacts more than just him.

“Hopefully, it allows him to make better decisions moving forward.”

Those were tough and the right words from our gaffer in the pre-match presser. Players, especially the experienced ones, need to realise the impact they have with their actions on and off the pitch on everyone associated with the club. Such poor decisions can have a negative impact on the youngsters in the squad and the talents that are coming through the academy.

Yves Bissouma has been handed a one-game ban by Tottenham

One silly act has ruled Bissouma out of the first game against the Foxes, which is quite a shame but at the same time the right decision. The £55k-a-week midfielder needs to introspect on his actions and take a lot more responsibility when representing our club.

It is the right decision to leave the Malian enforcer out of the Spurs’ squad, underling such irresponsible acts will not be tolerated at this footballing institution. Let us see how Bissouma finds his way back from the punishable mistake.
