Tottenham battle it out with Premier League rivals for €40m 'rock at the back'

For the majority of this summer transfer window, Spurs have opted to boost their youth ranks.

They are, however, likely to go for a senior acquisition or two as hinted by their manager recently.

To that end, a defender’s name has appeared, who is also attracting interest from another Premier League club.

Liverpool-linked Piero Hincapié appears on Tottenham’s radar

As reported by El Comercio (via Sport Witness), Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié is likely to be on the move despite this summer his current coach, Xabi Alonso, wanting him to stay.

The 22-year-old Ecuador international has been impressing with his performances ever since arriving in Germany three seasons ago and played a key part in the historic Bayer side that completed the domestic double last term while also making the Europa League final.

Liverpool, having famously signed no senior player thus far, are linked with him, with interest also registered from La Liga’s Atlético Madrid.

Valued by Transfermarkt at €40 million, Hincapié has his €40,000-per-week Bayer contract set to run until June 2027. He has been described as a ‘rock at the back’.

Liverpool’s desperation may prompt them to pay for Hincapié much more above market value than Spurs would want to, even though the Lilywhites could use more reinforcement at the back.

Last season, as Spurs’ campaign fizzled out towards the back end, they found themselves light on defenders. Regardless of what happens this time round, they’ll need to be savvy and prompt with their player rotation if they are to avoid the physical fatigue that set in last time around.

To that end, they need someone like Hincapié, and they’d be wise to go at least some distance in matching Liverpool’s offers for the Ecuadorian.
