Postecoglou’s trusted £55k a week lieutenant could face Tottenham exit after recent fiasco

Tottenham Hotspur start their Premier League campaign away at King Power Stadium against newly promoted Leicester City on Monday night. The loyal Lilywhites fanbase are eagerly awaiting the debut of Dominic Solanke and Archie Gray, hoping for an instant impact.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou used last season to implement his philosophy but maintains the importance of progress and winning trophies. The Australian earned praise for his attacking style of play and winning mentality, giving hope to the Spurs fans.

Spurs are still active in the transfer market, seeking reinforcement to strengthen their squad and with many outgoing fringe players. Postecoglou needs to balance the squad correctly as the Europa League competition increases the fixtures compared to last season.

Postecoglou and Bissouma

The situation became complicated when Yves Bissouma’s behaviour drew unwanted controversy, prompting the manager to suspend him. According to Daily Mail reporter Josh Hughes (The Spurs Chat Podcast via YouTube), the Spurs could sell Bissouma despite his importance. He said:

“Bissouma could be one that goes now. That is a new one, who might take him? I think there would be a lot of takers for him because there aren’t a huge amount of good players in that defensive midfield position.”

While Spurs have many midfield players competing for the two positions in the double pivot, Bissouma is still very important. The transfer market lacks defensive midfield options that are capable of replacing the 27-year-old and fitting Ange’s system quickly.

Bissouma currently earns £55,000 per week with the Lilywhites, which is a bargain for his talent. The Mali international featured in 28 matches under Postecoglou and played a key role in the Premier League campaign.

Despite Bissouma’s off-field antics, Postecoglou faces a tough decision in the coming weeks over the defensive midfielder. The Lilywhites are already assessing the market for an all-action midfielder and this situation would only make it a necessity.

Nevertheless, Spurs will face Leicester without Bissouma and that performance will also play a big role in the club’s decision-making. If the 27-year-old stays at the club after the summer window closes, he needs to understand that such behavioural issues are unacceptable.
