Pundit warns of disaster if Tottenham accept £70m bid for Messi-backed star

Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero has been subject to links with a move away from White Hart Lane, as he is linked with Real Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to make some progress in the outgoing department as they look to improve the budget to reinvest in the squad before the summer transfer window comes to a conclusion.

Many players have been subject to links with a move away from White Hart Lane; however, one of the surprising developments of the window was when Cristian Romero established links with a move to Real Madrid.

Daniel Levy faces Romero temptation

While Daniel Levy was previously reluctant to entertain any Madrid possibilities, the former player now suggests that the club chairman would be ready to sanction a transfer for the Argentine defender in a £70 million move.

The former Atalanta defender has been an integral part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad at Hotspur Way, and he has formed an excellent partnership with Dutch defender Micky van de Ven.

And despite his success at N17, Alan Hutton believes that the North Londoners would be willing to consider a “huge” offer if it was made before the deadline. However, he also acknowledges that it would be a nightmare for Ange Postecoglou to lose him before the deadline.

Romero’s £70m exit?

Spurs must prioritize keeping Romero?

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Hutton said:

“I think it would be huge. Crystal Palace want £70million for Marc Guehi, I know he’s young and had a brilliant Euros and I really like him as a player but Romero, I think you’re talking around about that mark. He can be rash, but I think for what he does, his pace and his recovery tackles, he just suits Tottenham. If they don’t hit that, I don’t think they’ll want to sell. He’s such an important player for Tottenham next to Micky van de Ven as well, I think they complement each other. To lose him at this stage, I think would be an absolute nightmare for the manager.”

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed signings, transfers in, out, loan exits, releases for 2024/25

As Hutton insists it would be a disaster and more to lose Romero this close to the end of the summer window. However, that £70 million price tag would ease the blow, as Levy can have the pick of his choice for that sum to replace Romero.

That being said, Romero has had his disciplinary problems, which have cost Spurs on multiple occasions. However, at his best, he is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Footballing legend Lionel Messi once named the 26-year-old ‘world’s best defender’. Here is what he had to say

“For me, he is the best defender in the world right now. Amazing performance tonight, man of the match.”

Ah well, if Messi says this, who are we to argue? It is difficult to see Spurs sanction a move for Romero this close to the conclusion of the summer window. Let’s see how the rumours progress over the next ten days.
