Tottenham in race with Liverpool to snatch Xabi Alonso-endorsed star from La Liga giants

Tottenham Hotspur are still looking at various situations within the transfer market to exploit and strengthen their squad even further. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou signed Dominic Solanke and Archie Gray for the frontline and central midfield during this summer window.

Meanwhile, the Lilywhites suffered a frustrating 1-1 draw against Leicester City in the away Premier League opener despite enjoying dominance. Spurs had numerous opportunities to kill the game and earn three points against the newly promoted side but they failed.

A goal against the run of play from Jamie Vardy allowed the host to steal two points from Postecoglou’s men. Tottenham got a proper view of some defensive vulnerability that could haunt them during the campaign if they persist.

The London giants could use the summer transfer market to rectify this situation by signing a centre-back before the deadline. According to Fichajes, Tottenham are ready to battle Liverpool and other top clubs including La Liga’s Atletico Madrid for Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie.

The Lilywhites outsmarted their Merseyside competitive rivals and other clubs for Mickey van den Ven last summer. They could repeat a similar feat to solidify their defence and avoid what happened against Leicester in the opening game.

Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has backed Hincapie’s potential to become a world-class defender with the ability to play in numerous positions. He said:

“I think he’s a very modern defender. He can play in different positions. He’s served us as a full-back in recent games, but has also been the left centre-back when we’ve played with a back three. He’s aggressive, is making better decisions when he has the ball, backs himself more to play diagonal passes and get in behind. It motivates me to have a player with his potential and desire because he helps you and you help him. He’s a great player.”

Hincapie faces stern competition at Leverkusen with numerous options available for Alonso as they went unbeaten in the Bundesliga last season. The young defender struggled with game time last season which caused more rumours about

his uncertain future.

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed signings, transfers in, out, loan exits, releases for 2024/25

We have already covered the interesting prospect of signing Hincapie to bolster our defence further after adding to our midfield and attack. According to Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old is worth €40 million while he earns €40,000 per week. Given his quality and the inflated market, his price tag and salary are reasonable, even if you slightly increase the salary to entice him.
