Tottenham want to sign Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen
Tottenham Hotspur have brought in five new signings so far this summer, but head coach Ange Postecoglou is still keen to bolster his squad further before the August 30 transfer deadline.
One area that Spurs may look to bolster in the last week of the summer transfer window is central defence. Spurs added Radu Dragusin from Genoa to their squad in the January transfer window to cover and compete with first-choice centre-back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. At the same time, Eric Dier also left Tottenham after almost a decade-long stay, joining Bayern Munich.
Currently, Ange Postecoglou only has Romero, Van de Ven and Dragusin as centre-back options. Given that Spurs will be playing 37 more games in the Premier League and are also back in Europe after a year’s absence, the lack of depth in central defence is extremely alarming. Thus, the north Londoners may be in for a late swoop for a centre-back and links with Barcelona star have started to emerge.
According to a report from Spanish outlet SPORT, Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen has emerged as a surprise target for Tottenham and Manchester United.

Hansi Flick is currently stocked in the centre-back department and his club are working to get rid of at least one of them to trim the wage bill. Barcelona have identified Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia—formerly of Manchester City—as two players. There are high chances of Christensen and Garcia departing Camp Nou before the deadline, provided the club gets suitable offers.
Despite his initial reluctance to depart, Christensen is now more open to the idea and supposedly exploring his options, especially as the Catalan giants will have to offload players to make space for new signings. They have slapped a €25m price tag on the Danish defender, who only arrived at Camp Nou in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer from Chelsea.
The aforementioned report claims Spurs are ‘on the lookout’ for Christensen. However, the north London club could face competition from Man United to sign the Barcelona defender.
Christensen emerging on Barcelona’s chopping block is perhaps an indication that he will not have as much prominence this season under new tactician Hansi Flick. Formerly of Chelsea, the Denmark international has decent experience of Premier League football—as evidenced by 93 outings—which would come in handy to quickly settle down at Spurs.
The centre-back, who can also operate as a holding midfielder, is 28, and approaching the peak years of his career. Considering his ability, leadership skills and previous Premier League expertise, Spurs fans would not be wrong to expect Christensen to make an immediate impact for Ange Postecoglou’s side if a move goes through.

Valued at around a paltry €25m price tag, we must be all over Christensen’s signature in a bid to bolster our defensive options for the 2024/25 season.
