TTLB’s take: Three ways Tottenham can cover for injured €65m star against Everton

£165k-a-week Tottenham star delivers statistical masterclass against Everton: 93% passing, 7/11 duels won

Ange Postecoglou would be looking to get to winning ways after concluding the opening game of the season in an unexpected draw against Leicester City. The North Londoners will be facing Sean Dyche’s Everton this weekend as Spurs welcome the Merseyside Blues at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend in what will be their first home match of the new season.

Sean Dyche’s squad is usually organised defensively and difficult to break down owing to their stubborn block.

Many expected Spurs summer signing Dominic Solanke to be the key to Everton’s defensive lock. And if his first performance wearing the Spurs badge is to go by, he got into some good positions and could have easily notched a goal or two.

However, while Ange Postecoglou builds up to hosting Everton, he has received a massive blow as his £65 million star striker has picked up an injury, forcing the ex-Liverpool man to miss out on the game against Everton.

The Australian boss in charge of Tottenham confirmed the unavailability of Solanke in his pre-game press conference earlier today, claiming that Sooanke picked up a knock on his ankle against Leicester, which flared up throughout the week.

Ange, speaking about Solanke in his pre-game press conference as quoted by Football. London, said:

“Dom picked up a knock in the last game. He got through the game, but it flared up the day after, and he’ll miss the game tomorrow. It’s an ankle injury; he picked it up really early on when someone went across his ankle. It just depends on his recovery [when he returns]. Obviously,  we’ve got the international break. but it’s not serious.”

Tottenham fans would be sweating about the possible prospects to play in the number nine role going into next season.

We will take a brief look at the possible options that Spurs can deploy against Everton this weekend.

1. Playing Son down the middle

Captain Son through the middle?
Captain Son through the middle?

Tottenham played the majority of the past season with the South Korean ace in the central role,

and Ange Postecoglou can once again turn to his skipper to deliver in front of goal this weekend.

Son is one of the most consistent players in the Lilywhites squad, and he can adapt to various tactical models across the game, which can help the Spurs admirably.

The point to consider here is to understand the sunk cost of his involvement in the middle rather than his preferred left-wing role.

2. Getting Richy Back

Is Richarlison fit enough to start against his former side?
Is Richarlison fit enough to start against his former side?

Richarlison has been subject to aggressive links with a move away from White Hart Lane. The Brazilian international has been an inconsistent presence since his move from Everton, and the arrival of Dominic Solanke would be an arrow in his direction.

Richy would be keen to prove his ability and show the Tottenham faithful that he is still capable and more than capable of winning games for Spurs.

This is also an opportunity for him to prove his skills to Ange Postecoglou and carve out a future for himself at White Hart Lane. Of course, all this is possible only if he is fit, which is a question mark.

3. Timo Time

Timo Time at the N17?

Tottenham and Ange have played Timo Werner in the left-wing role since he moved to the club in January. Can that change now?

We have seen the Germany international scoring consistent goals in the number nine role in the Bundesliga; however, he hasn’t been able to replicate his output in the striking role in the Premier League when he used to feature in the role with Chelsea.

Werner is difficult to contain when given space to run in behind, which is exactly why Ange may try him down the middle against Everton.
