Tottenham have been linked with a move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes
The quality and depth at Tottenham Hotspur is on the rise as head coach Ange Postecoglou builds a strong squad that can achieve big things in the present as well as in the future. The Greek-Australian tactician is keen to build on a fine debut season in north London, hoping to guide his club to Champions League football after narrowly missing last time out.
The decision to acquire young midfield talents such as Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray to replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele in Big Ange’s squad is laudable. However, having sold Oliver Skipp to Leicester City, Tottenham must plan to replace him in their squad before the transfer window closes down. And one player who has supposedly caught the north London club’s attention is Wolves star Joao Gomes.
Since arriving at Wolves from Brazilian club Flamengo in January 2023, Joao Gomes has established himself as one of the most exciting young midfielders in the Premier League. With his passing technique, composure on the ball, ball-winning skills and dribbling ability, the Brazilian has become a sought-after commodity.
Thus, given his rise in stature after just over 18 months with Wolves, whose boss Gary O’Neil hailed him as a ‘super talent’ last October, it is not surprising to see Gomes falling on the radar of Spurs.

However, Football London’s Tottenham reporter Alasdair Gold has poured cold water on the club’s links with the £30k-per-week Wolves midfielder. He feels the Lilywhites are not interested in signing Gomes in this transfer window, with Ange Postecoglou more than ready to develop Gray and Bergvall by giving them opportunities to shine in the middle of the park this season.
“I mentioned the other day that Spurs are not believed to be in for Joao Gomes. I think the club will continue to look at various positions over the next 10 days or so to add depth if they can, but I think Postecoglou is also very keen to let Gray and Bergvall loose on the Premier League and both can play in that role,” Alasdair Gold replied to a fan asking about Spurs’ interest in Gomes in a Q&A session.
This update from one of the club’s reliable correspondents should be bittersweet for Spurs fans. On one hand, there will be frustration knowing Spurs aren’t actually interested in Gomes—a player who has demonstrated enough at Wolves that he is destined to play for a top club and compete at the highest level.
On the other, there will be palpable excitement in some parts of the fanbase that Postecoglou is keen to provide opportunities to Gray and Bergvall to showcase their talents in the Premier League this season. Both Gray and Bergvall were impressive in the pre-season tour and did well after coming on as substitutes in the 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Monday.

Nonetheless, it is very important to note that our club remain in the market to add some depth in different positions in the squad if an opportunity arises as per Gold. Let us wait and watch what happens in the final week of the window.
