Tottenham still like Thierry Henry-endorsed talent even after £65m star arrival – Journo

Tottenham certainly ‘like’ Jonathan David, claims reputed journalist Alasdair Gold

Tottenham Hotspur have signed some exciting talents with huge potential in this ongoing summer transfer window. One of those is Dominic Solanke—a £65m buy from Bournemouth who has become the club’s record signing this summer.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has been looking to sign a pure No.9 our club legend Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich last summer. The club have fulfilled Big Ange’s demand for a new striker by landing Dominic Solanke, who made his Tottenham bow on Monday in the 1-1 away draw with Leicester City.

Despite smashing the transfer record for Solanke, the north London club still remain open to try and improve the strike force further in the final week of the transfer window. They remain interested in LOSC Lille star Jonathan David, as per Football London’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold.

In a Q&A session with the Spurs fans, Alasdair Gold hinted that the club could go for another striker after Solanke’s buy and admire Lille striker Jonathan David. Nonetheless, Ange Postecoglou now has options in the forward department to cope if Solanke gets injured.

“Spurs certainly like Jonathan David. However, if Solanke gets injured then they’ve got Richarlison. That’s a better situation than last year rather than the same boat really. You never know, Ange might want a third striker in there, but he’s got Son, Kulusevski and Johnson who could also play there as well as young Will Lankshear. It would seem a spot with a bit more depth now,” Gold replied to a fan asking for an update on the club’s search for further attacking reinforcements.

Solanke is Tottenham’s marquee signing, and going by durability at Bournemouth last season, one would expect him to be available for the entire 2024/25 season. However, there are certainly no guarantees and we would want the English striker to stay fully fit and deliver the goods, but it is imperative to have a solid back-up plan in the squad.

Richarlison, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson can all operate centrally, as per Gold’s thinking, but apart from Son and Richarlison—who shared the No.9 duties last season, the lack of depth in that position is concerning. As talented as Will Lankshear is, Big Ange is unlikely to count on him to make an impact week in, and week out in the first team.

So, it would make sense if Spurs fortify their strike force further before the transfer window slams shut, and in that case, David would be perfect. David, who was endorsed by legendary France striker Thierry Henry in 2022 for his direct style of play and strength to beat opponents, has been on Spurs’ radar for some time now.

The Canada international’s numbers at Lille are quite good, and after spending four years in France, he could be tempted by a new challenge. If we offer him the chance and platform to develop under Postecoglou, it could be difficult for David to turn down.
