Tottenham make decision on the pursuit of £100k per week 'drunken master' – Report

Tottenham unlikely to make a move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to do some more business during the business end of the summer transfer window. They have added some exciting young talents with high ceiling, thus, bringing down the average age of Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

The arrival of Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert from Bournemouth and Burnley respectively have strengthened Spurs’ attacking options. As a result, they now have enough quality and depth in the forward department to tackle the gruelling 2024/25 campaign.

According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham are now unlikely to pursue a deal for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze. Instead, they will focus on signing a new centre-back and central midfielder before the August 30 transfer deadline.

Eberechi Eze has been arguably Crystal Palace’s best player in the last couple of seasons. One of the exciting talents in Premier League football, the 26-year-old enjoyed his most productive season in 2023/24 with the Eagles with 11 Premier League goals in 27 appearances.

The creative midfielder was sensational during the second half of last season, combining exceptionally well with the likes of Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Adam Wharton and helping Oliver Glasner’s side play some attractive football.

The aforementioned report claims Spurs’ priority now is to sign a central midfielder after selling Oliver Skipp to newly promoted Leicester City earlier this week. This supposedly rules out a move for Eze, who earned the nickname of ‘drunken master’ at Queens Park Rangers academy due to his languid style of play.

There is no doubt that the £100k-per-week Palace playmaker is an incredible footballer and would strengthen Big Ange’s Spurs as a whole. However, the Lilywhites having spent on Odobert and Solanke means there is no immediate requirement for another player on the attacking end of the pitch.

Plus, the England international’s £60million release clause at Selhurst Park has now expired, and after selling Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen to Bayern Munich and Fulham respectively, and Palace still at risk of losing skipper Marc Guehi to Newcastle United, they are extremely unlikely to sanction Eze’s sale so late in the transfer window. The playmaker no longer having a buyout clause means the Eagles are now in full control of his destiny.

Ideally, one would ask where Eze fits in at Spurs given the attacking riches Big Ange has at his disposal. Thus, Spurs have seemingly taken a wise decision to abandon the pursuit of the Palace star and focus on reinforcing the key areas of the squad, i.e. the central defence and central midfield.
