Andreas Christensen has decided to stay at Barcelona amid Tottenham interest
Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a solid summer transfer window thus far but there are a few areas in the squad that still require addressing. One of those areas is the defence.
The north London side signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa in the January transfer window to replace Eric Dier, who left the club to join Bayern Munich. Having not invested in a new centre-back this summer, Big Ange currently has Radu Dragusin, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero as centre-back options at his disposal.
However, it isn’t enough to tackle the taxing the 2024/25 campaign which will also include competing in the Europa League. The lack of options and depth in the central defensive unit is alarming, to say the least. An experienced defender but budget-friendly may appeal to the Tottenham chiefs a week before the transfer window slams shut.
Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen has been linked with a move to Tottenham of late. He has emerged as a surprise target for the north Londoners and Manchester United.

Hansi Flick is currently well-stocked in the centre-back department and his club Barcelona were working to move Andreas Christensen off their books to trim the wage bill as well as make space in the squad for new signings. This decision is largely driven by the need to manage the club’s finances better. However, their plans could be dealt a blow.
According to a report from Spanish outlet SPORT, Andreas Christensen is not thinking about leaving Barcelona this summer as he is comfortable and settled with his family. He wants to continue representing Blaugrana despite the defender not being considered an undisputed starter under new boss Hansi Flick, having come off the bench in the second half in the 2-1 win over Valencia last weekend.
The Denmark international’s decision to stay put at Nou Camp should come as a big blow for Tottenham. Christensen, regarded as “one of the best defenders in the world” by Brentford boss Thomas Frank, would have certainly been a fantastic defensive option for Big Ange’s side. Romero, Van de Ven and Dragusin are not sufficient to cover the entire 2024/25 season, and given injuries are part and parcel of the game, Spurs must have enough depth in central depth.
This is exactly the Barcelona star would have given to the Lilywhites—quality depth. Due to his previous Premier League experience with Chelsea, the 28-year-old—now at the peak of his powers—could have adjusted quickly and helped Postecoglou’s unit.
Due to his quality, experience and leadership skills, Christensen would have been an incredible option to compete with the current crop of Spurs’ centre-backs while raising the overall ceiling of the squad. Also, his supposed availability for just €25m was extremely appealing, perhaps making the ex-Chelsea man the ideal package to take Tottenham’s defensive ranks to another level.

However, we will have to shift our attention elsewhere and find a quality alternative after Christensen’s decision to stay put at Barcelona.
