Spurs likely to miss out on Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli

Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to end the summer transfer window on a high by adding some quality players.

Daniel Levy & Co. have made some exciting signings in the offseason, and they would be looking to add to the window to ensure that Ange Postecoglou has the required squad to tackle the taxing 2024/25 season.

The north London side decided to sell Oliver Skipp to Leicester City last week. This has resulted in Big Ange losing a bit of squad depth in the middle of the park. On top, with Rodrigo Bentancur having become susceptible to injury problems, and new additions Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall very young with no real experience at the highest level, Tottenham’s lack of depth in central midfield has to be addressed before the transfer window slams shut.

Manchester United star Scott McTominay has been among Spurs’ midfield targets this summer, but it looks like he’s heading to Serie A. According to a report from the Athletic, Napoli have agreed to a fee in the region of £25.4m with Manchester United for midfielder Scott McTominay. However, personal terms are still to be agreed and the Scot is yet to agree to the move to Antonio Conte’s Napoli.

Napoli agreeing a fee with Man United for McTominay should come as a big blow for Spurs. Big Ange’s club were tracking the 27-year-old and trying to hijack their London neighbours Fulham’s move in July. Fulham once looked to be favourites to land the Scotland international’s signature but changed their transfer plans after signing Emile Smith Rowe and Sander Berge.

Man United were then demanding £40m but suitors’ tentativeness to pay that amount led to them lowering their demands for the midfielder, who has entered the final year of his contract (Transfermarkt). Spurs’ interest in McTominay would have stemmed from Big Ange’s preference to work with multifunctional players.

McTominay certainly can play in different positions across the midfield, as we have witnessed at Man United over the years. He would have been perfect in Ange Postecoglou’s system as a box-crashing No.8, helping the team at both ends of the pitch. The Red Devils star could have also added some much-needed physicality to our midfield which we lost with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s exit.

The Lancaster-born talent has scored so many important goals for his club in recent years, and a player of his goalscoring instinct in the box would have added a lot of value to the Lilywhites’ squad. In addition, he’d also have offset the departure of Skipp and maintained our homegrown quota.

Napoli agreeing a £25.4m fee with Man United would represent an absolute bargain in today’s age and market for a player of McTominay’s quality and experience. While he is yet to agree terms with the Italian outfit, it looks like Spurs are now likely to miss out on the Scot’s services.
