Tottenham could miss out on signing Chelsea outcast Trevoh Chalobah
Ange Postecoglou has overseen a massive squad reboot this summer after a successful debut season at Tottenham Hotspur. The kind of signings Spurs have made fits Ange Postecoglou’s values and vision like a glove.
Yet, there are a couple of areas that still appear light in terms of squad depth. One of those is the central defence, with Tottenham currently having Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin as the only senior options at Big Ange’s disposal.
Ben Davies was used as a stop-gap solution in central defence last season and, while it worked out, the squad needs proper options in every position to challenge for Champions League spots as well as trophies this season.

Football London’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold had reported about Tottenham’s interest in Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah in June.
Trevoh Chalobah was recently informed that he is surplus to requirements and was not a part of Enzo Maresca’s plans at Chelsea. The additions of Tosin Adarabioyo and Renato Veiga this summer, coupled with Wesley Fofana recovering from a long-term injury, have seen the Blues freeze him out of the squad.
Since mid-July, it became apparent that Chalobah has no future at Stamford Bridge after he was left out of the 28-player squad that was selected for the pre-season tour of the United States. As a result, the former England youth international is now among many exiled squad members who are training away from Maresca’s selected group of players.
However, it looks like the 25-year-old could end up staying put at his boyhood club. According to Jacob Steinberg from The Guardian, Trevoh Chalobah hasn’t been impressed by the offers received on his table and he could still stay at Chelsea. Considering his contract doesn’t expire until 2028 (Transfermarkt), he can be choosy about a transfer.
This should come as a blow for both Chelsea and Spurs. The £50k-per-week defender is not wanted at Stamford Bridge and selling him would have freed up space in Maresca’s squad and wage bill. Presently frozen from the first team, it is highly unlikely the Sierra Leone-born talent would get opportunities to play at Chelsea even if he decides to stay put.
As far as Spurs are concerned, a player in the ilk of Chalobah would have helped Big Ange’s squad massively. He’d have been a solid utility player due to his ability to operate anywhere across the defensive line and in defensive midfield. Having a player of such versatility is always beneficial for any manager, let alone Big Ange.

However, looking at from Chalobah’s angle, it is safe to say that he is privileged to be picky about his next adventure as he has a long contract with the West London club. After being banished from the first team, he has every right to hold on at Chelsea.
