Three players Spurs could sign before the transfer window ends

With the transfer window nearing its close, Tottenham Hotspur could still benefit from a few strategic signings to bolster their squad for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. Ange Postecoglou has already made some astute acquisitions, but a few more additions could provide the depth and quality necessary to navigate the rigours of the Premier League, domestic cups, and European competition. Spurs have shown glimpses of brilliance under Postecoglou’s management, but there are areas of the squad that could use reinforcements, particularly in defence, where depth is crucial for a successful campaign.

In this context, three potential signings could make a significant impact. First, a Premier League-proven central defender who can provide reliable backup for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. This player would not only add depth but also bring experience and stability to Tottenham’s backline. Second, a left-back could provide solid defensive cover, particularly if Spurs decide to offload some of their current defenders.

Finally, bringing in an experienced goalkeeper with Premier League credentials to back up Guglielmo Vicario would be a prudent move, ensuring that Spurs have reliable options between the posts. Here’s a closer look at each of these potential signings and how they could contribute to Tottenham’s campaign.

James Tarkowski

You’ll hardly find Tottenham links with the player. However, that is what makes this fun. A potential acquisition out of nowhere. The Everton centre-back is an ideal candidate for Tottenham’s defensive reinforcement needs. Tarkowski has been a mainstay in the Premier League for several seasons, earning a reputation as a solid, reliable, and no-nonsense defender. With a wealth of experience in England’s top flight, including a successful stint at Burnley before his move to Everton, Tarkowski would bring the kind of stability and leadership that Spurs could use in their backline.

Tarkowski’s physicality, aerial prowess, and excellent reading of the game make him a perfect fit for Postecoglou’s system,

particularly as a backup option to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. While those two are undoubtedly Tottenham’s first-choice centre-backs, Tarkowski would provide a quality alternative, especially when rotation is necessary due to the demands of multiple competitions. His experience in the Premier League means he could slot into the defence seamlessly, without the need for an extended adaptation period.

Moreover, Tarkowski’s leadership qualities cannot be overstated. He has captained his sides in the past and brings a calm, authoritative presence to the defence. This would be invaluable to Tottenham, particularly in high-pressure situations where experience and composure are required. Signing Tarkowski would not only strengthen Tottenham’s defensive depth but also provide a mentor figure for younger defenders like Ashley Phillips among others, ensuring that the club has both short-term and long-term stability at the back.

Tyrick Mitchell

Defensive solidity has been an area of concern for Tottenham, and the potential signing of Tyrick Mitchell from Crystal Palace could address some of these issues. Mitchell has been a standout performer for Palace, particularly since the arrival of Oliver Glasner. The 24-year-old left-back has not only been defensively sound but has also shown an ability to contribute offensively.

One of Mitchell’s key attributes is his versatility. He has been deployed as a wing-back under Glasner, which has allowed him to showcase his attacking abilities while remaining solid at the back. This versatility would be valuable to Tottenham, especially if Ryan Sessegnon and Ben Davies were to leave the club. While Destiny Udogie currently has the left-back position secured, Mitchell could provide reliable cover and competition, ensuring that Spurs maintain defensive stability even when Udogie is unavailable.

However, separating Mitchell from Selhurst Park may not be straightforward. With only a year remaining on his contract, Palace might consider selling if they cannot agree on an ex

tension. Tottenham could potentially leveragethis situation to their advantage, but it would likely depend on Palace’s willingness to part with their twice-capped England international. If Spurs were able to secure Mitchell’s services, they would be adding a player with Premier League experience, defensive resilience, and the ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch—a combination that could prove invaluable as they look to solidify their defence. This potential move, could in all likelihood, prove to be the best part of our transfer window, second only to the acquisition of Dominic Solanke.

Alex McCarthy

The seasoned Premier League goalkeeper is currently at Southampton. McCarthy has spent several seasons in the English top flight, gaining experience at clubs like Reading, Crystal Palace, and most notably, Southampton, where he has been a key figure between the posts.

While he may not be a headline-grabbing name, McCarthy’s reliability and familiarity with the demands of the Premier League would make him an ideal backup option for Spurs. He’s capable of stepping in when needed without any significant drop in quality, providing Ange Postecoglou with peace of mind should Vicario be unavailable for any reason.

Additionally, McCarthy’s presence in the squad would offer mentoring opportunities for Tottenham’s younger goalkeepers, who could benefit from his experience and professionalism. His calm and composed approach to the game, coupled with his solid shot-stopping abilities, would ensure that Tottenham have dependable coverage in goal throughout the season. Signing McCarthy would be a low-risk, high-reward move that could pay dividends as Spurs navigate the challenges of a demanding campaign.

Each of these signings would address specific needs within the squad, providing Tottenham with the depth and quality necessary to compete on multiple fronts. By making these strategic additions, Spurs could

set themselves up for a successful campaign, with the potential to challenge for silverware and secure a top-four finish in the Premier League. As always, the key will be in making the right decisions in the final days of the transfer window, ensuring that the squad is balanced, cohesive, and ready to tackle the season head-on.
