Big Ange and Spurs recruitment team eyeing late centre-back swoop

Tottenham have prioritised reinforcing the centre-back position before the August 30 transfer deadline

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a busy last couple of days of the summer transfer window.

The Lilywhites are working hard behind the scenes to give head coach Ange Postecoglou the best possible squad to compete for a place in the Champions League and trophies this season.

Dominic Solanke has arrived from Bournemouth to become the club’s record signing at around £65m, while teenage quartet Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Yang Min-Hyeok and Wilson Odobert have also made the permanent switch to N17. Meanwhile, Emerson Royal, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele and Oliver Skipp are some notable names who have left the club this summer.

There is an expectation that players such as Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso will also depart and find new homes before the August 30 transfer deadline. Needless to say, while the north Londoners have made some fantastic, long-term acquisitions, they lack quality depth in certain areas of the pitch—primarily in defence.

According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham are prioritising a late swoop for a central defender.

Big Ange and his team have identified centre-back as a pivotal area of the pitch that requires more depth to negotiate the rigours of the Premier League, domestic cup competitions, and European adventure. Eric Dier and Joe Rodon have respectively joined Bayern Munich and Leeds United permanently, while Ashley Phillips has been loaned out to Championship side Stoke City.

Spurs invested in Radu Dragusin during the January transfer window, signing him from Genoa to compete with the first-choice centre-back pairing of

Ben Davies can play in that position but he is in the final yearof his contract and just an auxiliary option for Big Ange.

Big Ange and his transfer team have identified centre-half as a key position that needs more depth

There are no concrete links to a centre-half, which in the current grand scheme of things is surprising. The late sale of Oliver Skipp means the North London outfit do have the funds to replenish the squad with necessary reinforcements, but it will be difficult to land a quality defender at this stage in the window. Nonetheless, they remain ready to attack if an opportunity arises.

Let’s hope we land a centre-back to boost Big Ange’s defensive options as Romero, Van de Ven and Dragusin are not enough to cover the 2024/25 season.
