Tottenham Hotspur underwent a significant revamp over the summer transfer window, as boss Ange Postecoglou aimed to shape his squad as per his vision.

The North London side strengthened the key areas of the squad with astute signings. They acquired the signatures of Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert, Dominic Solanke and Min-Hyeok Yang while re-signing Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig. This represents a fine blend of first-team stars and young guns with high potential.

As far as the outgoings are concerned, the Lilywhites succeeded in shifting plenty of deadwood and fringe players out of their squad. Emerson Royal, Joe Rodon, Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and Oliver Skipp are among the players to have departed N17, with Tottenham recovering around £46m in sales.

The Evening Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick has expressed his ‘surprise’ over Tottenham’s summer transfer business, especially how the club managed to offload plenty of deadwood from the squad.

“Well, when you were asking which clubs you were surprised by earlier, I was going to bring up Spurs, because I was a little bit surprised by the window overall,” Dan Kilpatrick said while discussing transfers with some fellow journalists on Transfer Talk podcast.

“I think if you go back to what Postecoglou was saying in April about the need for change, he kind of laid out his manifesto for a second season in the club, and talked about how drastically Spurs still needed to change their 11, change the way they worked, changed the culture of the club.

“So, I wondered if it was going to be a real summer overhaul, and I think we did see that in one respect, in terms of the players they got out. You talked about Newcastle struggling to get players out, but Spurs did really well at finally offloading all this deadwood.”

Tottenham have struck an extremely profitable deal with Real Betis for Giovani Lo Celso.

Big Ange inherited a mixed squad from Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte’s tenures at the club when he took in charge of Spurs last summer. He made some good buys across his first two transfer windows and helped Tottenham clinch a fifth spot in the Premier League, narrowly missing a Champions League place.

The Greek-Aussie tactician has employed an aggressive, pressing style of football with possession, emphasizing on building the play from the back. His system requires players with high energy, intelligence and technical skills to fit into the style, and the club have backed him by adding some top talents to the squad.

Kilpatrick has hit the nail on his head by claiming that Spurs have done a great job by shifting the underperforming and fringe players before Big Ange’s second season at the White Hart Lane. The mini-overhaul has gone well, and while results haven’t quite reflected across the opening three league games of the new season, it is a process that will certainly yield outcomes shortly under Ange Postecoglou.
