Sky Sports journalist compares Tottenham youngster to Barcelona superstar

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall earns comparisons with Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong from reliable journalist

Tottenham Hotspur have made some astute signings since Ange Postecoglou took charge of the club last summer. The club’s approach has shifted more towards young talents with room to develop under Big Ange.

Lucas Bergvall is among a core of young talents that Spurs have signed since the start of 2024. The Lilywhites snapped him the young Swedish prodigy in a £8.5m deal including additional add-ons from Djurgardens at the start of February, thereby, beating competition from the likes of Barcelona, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It was an opportunity Tottenham didn’t want to let go six months back. Lucas Bergvall, after a strong season with Djurgardens, officially joined Spurs at the start of July. The creative midfielder made his unofficial debut for Spurs in a 5-0 friendly win over Scottish Premiership side Hearts in July. He marked it with an assist, giving a glimpse of his talent and potential to the Spurs fans.

The one-cap Sweden international has come off the bench in each of Tottenham’s three Premier League games thus far this season. While results haven’t fully gone their way, the teenager has showcased his talent in these cameo Premier League appearances.

As Big Ange slowly looks to integrate him into his first-team plans, Sky Sports journalist Sam Tighe feels “more than excited” with the prospect of Bergvall starting games for the north London side in the future. And, while he has tempered expectations and kept his excitement in check for the season, Tighe says Bergvall reminds him of Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.

“I know he’s only played about 20 minutes of football, but I’m trying not to get excited here,” Tighe said while discussing about Bergvall with some fellow journalists on the Transfer Talk

podcast.

“But when he runs around the pitches and scampers across and picks the ball up and drops it off, he looks like Frenkie de Jong to me!

“I don’t know if it’s just that crop of blonde hair or what, but I’m pretty excited about Lucas Bergvall – I’m thinking about starting the fan club.”

Bergvall’s decision to join Spurs in February amid interest from several clubs including Barcelona reflected his belief in the vision and direction of the club under Big Ange. The Swede’s flexibility, energy, work rate and skill set make him a valuable addition to Tottenham’s midfield, offering depth and quality to the squad.

Our gaffer is doing a fine job of slowly but steadily integrating him into his squad, and going by his performances so far, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to claim that we have got a gem in our hands. Plus, Bergvall drawing comparisons with De Jong—one of Europe’s top central midfielders— from a reliable journalist underlines the talent he is why Big Ange and his coaching staff will look to nurture.
