Tottenham prodigy Lucas Bergvall is backed to have a bright future for Sweden
It is the first international break of the new season and selected Tottenham Hotspur players have joined their respective nations. Swedish duo Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall are among the players who have left the club to represent their nations in the UEFA Nations League.
Dejan Kulusevski, now one of the senior members, led his nation for the very first time in his career when Sweden opened their UEFA Nations League campaign against Azerbaijan in Baku on Thursday evening. Despite no goals or assists, the Tottenham star played a key role in helping Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side open their Nations League campaign with a 3-1 win over Azerbaijan.
Lucas Bergvall was introduced to the action with around 18 minutes left on the clock, replacing Alex Douglas in the middle of the park. Just eight minutes later after his introduction, Sweden scored the third goal and sealed the deal in Baku.

It was the 18-year-old’s second cap for his nation, having made his debut for the senior team as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 friendly win against Estonia earlier this year in January. While Lucas Bergvall couldn’t make much of an impact in the 3-1 win over Azerbaijan, head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson praised the Spurs man after the game.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Expressen, Tomasson stated that he felt it was the right time to give Bergvall a chance instead of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson, who already has six caps to his name.
“I know that Hugo wants to start matches and do better,” Tomasson said.
“When I made the changes, I felt it was the right match to give Lucas Bergvall the chance. We cannot have all the youngest players on the field at the same time.”
In another interview with Viaplay (h/t Dagens Nyheter), the Danish tactician claimed:
“There is a lot of competition. We have several young players with great potential. Hugo is one of them. We also have Ayari, Nanasi and Bergvall today. There are four players who could mean a lot for the future of Swedish football.”
It was valuable minutes for Bergvall against Azerbaijan on Thursday evening. It was just his second cap for Sweden and slowly but steadily he can become a regular for Tomasson’s side. The Sweden head coach has backed the Spurs starlet to have a bright future for his country, so it will be all up to the creative midfielder to continue making the most of the chances he gets.

Bergvall officially arrived at Tottenham in July and has adapted quite well to the new surroundings. After featuring prominently in the pre-season tour of Asia, the teenage prodigy has got minutes off the bench in Spurs’ opening three Premier League games. Only by looking at glimpses of his talent and potential, it is safe to claim we have struck gold with the Swede’s signing.
