Atletico Madrid contact agents of Spurs skipper Son Heung-min over a potential free transfer in 2025

La Liga side Atletico Madrid want to sign Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min on a free transfer in 2025

Tottenham Hotspur are facing an extremely anxious situation with the contract of their skipper Son Heung-min.

The Lilywhites may have endured a mixed start to the 2024/25 season with just four points collected from a possible nine, but Son Heung-min has begun his 10th campaign in North London extremely well. He has scored two goals in three Premier League appearances, continuing his form from where he left off last season.

However, the South Korea international has entered the final year of his contract at Tottenham (Transfermarkt). This has led to speculation over his long-term future at the club, with cash-rich Saudi Pro League clubs already monitoring the situation. A potential free transfer next summer is being eyed as the Saudi Arabian clubs look to enhance their league with further high-profile acquisitions.

Now, a European club has expressed an interest in signing our skipper. According to a report from Spanish outlet Todofichajes, Atletico Madrid are keen on signing Son Heung-min from Spurs on a free transfer.

Son is well into his 30s but there has been no dip in the form and fitness of the player. He netted 17 goals and registered a further 10 assists in 35 Premier League appearances last season, shouldering the Tottenham attack extremely well following the departure of Harry Kane. The South Asian superstar’s fitness levels and continued productivity in the Premier League has perhaps caught the attention of Atletico Madrid.

The aforementioned report adds the La Liga outfit have held informal talks with Son’s agent over a potential transfer next year. They are keeping an eye on the 32-year-old’s situation in North London and have put the forward on their list of targets in 2025.

Son, who has been a loyal servant for Spurs since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, may decide to move on after the expiry of his contract. There is also a big possibility of him extending his stay at N17 and strengthening his status further as an icon at the club. However, nothing is conclusive at this moment in time.

There has been no signs of a new contract being offered by Spurs, although reliable Football London correspondent Alasdair Gold has stated that an extension can certainly be agreed upon if both Son and the club want to make it happen. Given how Tottenham have operated under chairman Daniel Levy over the years, we doubt he’d allow an asset like Son to leave as a free agent.

The £190,000-per-week ace remains an extremely key figure and player for the club despite his advancing years—both on and off the pitch, thus, any decision our club takes on Son’s future will be well thought out several times.
