Spurs among several European clubs keen on signing Lille star Angel Gomes

Tottenham lining up a move for Lille star Angel Gomes in 2025

It seems Tottenham Hotspur have already started planning for the January transfer window, after spending millions in the past summer window.

The North London giants enjoyed a successful summer transfer window, as chairman Daniel Levy loosened his purse strings to back the head coach Ange Postecoglou. Not only did Levy bring in some hugely exciting players but also ensured that the deadwood in Ange Postecoglou’s dressing room was moved on.

Now, the club are identifying targets for winter. The additions of youngsters Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray have pretty much reinforced the midfield unit; however, they now have set their sights on a deep-lying playmaker.

According to a report from The Sun, Tottenham are among a host of top clubs interested in signing LOSC Lille star Angel Gomes.

Angel Gomes was recently called up to the England squad by interim boss Lee Carsley. After coming on as a substitute during the Republic of Ireland clash, he started in the 2-0 win over Finland at Wembley Stadium earlier this week. He competed the full 90 minutes as the Three Lions made a perfect start to their UEFA Nations League campaign under Lee Carsley.

The 24-year-old’s debut for England comes off the back of a strong 2023/24 campaign in Lille colours. A tactical switch from the No.10 role to a deeper central midfield position under former boss Paulo Fonseca saw Gomes play some of his career’s best football in the previous campaign. He registered two goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions as Les Dogues finished fourth in Ligue 1.

However, the two-cap England international could become a free agent at the end of the season as his contract (Transfermarkt) with Lille is due to expire. Many clubs are weighing up a January approach for Gomes, who earns €13,654 per-week at the Ligue 1 club. Lille will loathe to lose the ex-Manchester United academy starlet on a free transfer, so they might listen to offers in January and get a cut-price fee.

On that note, Spurs must look to sign Gomes when the transfer window reopens. The fleet-footed Salford-born talent could be the ideal partner for Yves Bissouma in the middle of the park, providing Big Ange’s side with some much-needed penetration, dynamism and flair from a deeper role.

He is press-resistant, technically strong, tactically versatile and likes to make the most use of his lower centre of gravity to skip past players with the ball. Plus, the Lille star would further improve the Lilywhites’ midfield depth. Having failed to cut the mustard at Manchester United, Gomes should be raring to prove himself in the Premier League if he gets an opportunity.

That being said, Spurs, at least must table a bid for the England midfielder as he has the qualities to take Big Ange’s midfield to another level.
