World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero has a contract at Tottenham until 2027
European champions Real Madrid were loosely interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero in the past summer transfer window. A move was never close to materialising but Real Madrid appear to have not given up and are set to try again in 2025.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Los Blancos want to bolster their backline next year and have made the Tottenham man one of their top targets. However, they do not want to meet the Lilywhites’ asking price of €60 million for the centre-back, setting a fee limit of €40 million.
Cristian Romero has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best defenders in the last couple of years. He has been a consistent presence at the heart of the Tottenham backline under Ange Postecoglou, impressing with his aggressive, front-footed defending as well as ball-playing skills.

The 26-year-old, who was coveted by Manchester United as well in the summer, has seen his stock soar further after the 2024 Copa America triumph with Argentina in the United States. This is the defender’s second Copa America triumph, and he also helped his nation lift the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Keeping in mind the South American’s development as a footballer and Real Madrid’s lingering interest, TBR Football exclusively reports that Tottenham are planning to open new contract talks with Romero before Christmas. Spurs are aware that Madrid are keen to strengthen their backline and the Argentinean is one of their primary targets for next year, so the North Londoners want to secure his future as quickly as possible.
Romero has been a mainstay at the back for Spurs ever since he arrived from Atalanta—initially on loan in 2021. His loan was turned into a permanent deal in August 2022. The £165,000-per-week recently reached his 100 appearances milestone for Spurs, chipping in with seven goals and an assist.
On the back of the Copa America winning campaign with La Albiceleste, the Cordoba-born superstar has started the new campaign strongly, scoring a goal in three Premier League appearances even though Big Ange’s side have not enjoyed positive results on the pitch. Romero still has three years remaining on his contract (Transfermarkt), and while the club are in a strong negotiating position, Spurs must come up with a lucrative contract offer to persuade Romero to commit his future.

Needless to say, our club also needs to start winning trophies again to attract world-class players from the market. And Romero falls into that bracket and we must do everything possible to keep hold of him.
