Postecoglou tells Tottenham’s players to go all in for the Carabao Cup
Tottenham Hotspur get their Carabao Cup campaign underway this week with a visit to Coventry City in the third round clash between the two sides. After successive defeats in the Premier League, it was called into question if indeed Ange Postecoglou can guide the team to their first major trophy since 2008, to which he remained bullish and optimistic.
The manager has urged his players to value the opportunity of playing in the cup competition as he said the following in his pre-match press conference, as quoted by The Guardian:
“I came here to try to win things. I think that should be our measure and if we fall short of that then we’ve fallen short and we need to be better. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with embracing that. If I said: ‘This is going to take three or four years,’ then yeah it would relieve pressure. But I don’t want to wait three or four years. This year’s an opportunity.”
There is no doubting Postecoglou’s mentality and there is every chance for Tottenham to be break their barren trophyless run under the Australian with the EFL Cup presenting them with the perfect opportunity to do so.
It is fair to say that the Premier League is still to distant a dream for Spurs at this point in time, while the Europa League and FA Cup could as well be too competitive for them to try and win in the immediate future.
The Carabao Cup is a tournament in which most sides usually utilise their fringe players, so Postecoglou can decide to go all out for it by deploying his primary options in the latter stages.
The 59-year-old will enter Tottenham folklore if indeed he can guide them to a trophy, even if it were a competition like the EFL Cup, which interestingly they came close to winning in 2021 under Jose Mourinho, before the Portuguese was unceremoniously sacked a week prior to the final.

It will be interesting to see how much determination Spurs’ players show towards the cause, and if indeed the club is also patient enough to let the former Melbourne City FC boss to ply his trade as he likes to. What is clear is that Postecoglou is very ambitious and his ability to maintain a positive rapport with everyone at the club makes him the ideal man for Tottenham Hotspur.
