Tottenham to hand South American defender wage package higher than Son

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a splendid summer transfer window as Daniel Levy impeccably balanced the incomings and outgoings, and one of the unwanted highlights of the offseason was when Real Madrid came knocking for Cristian Romero.

The Argentine centre-back signed for the Lilywhites in 2021 from Italian side Atalanta in a £42m deal, and he has established himself as one of the best defenders in the league since moving to N17.

Spurs offer Romero bumper deal to ward off Real Madrid

Levy breaks wage structure for Romero amid Real Madrid interest

Spurs named a mammoth price tag when Real Madrid came knocking, and that is apparent when you consider the progress that the player has made since he moved to White Hart Lane. His tag as a vice captain at Tottenham tells you about the levels that the defender has found.

With Madrid interested in acquiring the defender, the chiefs at Lilywhites have been keen on extending the players £165,000-a-week wages. The club is looking to make the Argentina international the highest paid player at the club in a bid of desperation to hold his services in the upcoming transfer windows, per Give Me Sport.

Tottenham’s Daniel Levy willing to pay top dollar to keep Romero

The report states that the North Londoners are willing to offer him a significant pay rise and hand him a £200,000-a-week pay day, provided he is willing to commit his long-term future at White Hart Lane.

Negotiating these pay terms would take Romero’s wages higher than club captain Son Heung Min, who credits £190,000 every seven days.

The South American will enter the final two years of his current contract at White Hart Lane at the end of the ongoing season, and Spurs are concerned that the Spanish giants will look at this as an ideal opportunity to test Tottenham’s resolve if he doesn’t pen down a new contract at N17.

GMS insist that Madrid’s interest in the player is genuine as Santiago Perez is looking to bolster his defensive options over the next 12 months; however, Daniel Levy will hold out on a £100 million price tag if they are to entertain Madrid sitting on the negotiations table.
