Tottenham had gentlemen's agreement to land nine-cap England international in the summer transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a magnificent summer transfer window as they brought some ceiling-raising players while maintaining their transfer strategy to sign young players with sky-high potential.

The North Londoners did bring in Archie Grey and Lucas Bregvall, two teenagers who look like they belong to the elites. However, Ange Postecoglou did want to bring in a maestro to support the development of the aforementioned duo.

Tottenham’s pursuit of Eze ends in disappointment

Will Spurs regret missing out on Eze?

The club identified Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze as a potential target for the summer, although a move for the nine-capped England international hit hand brakes when other Premier League clubs joined the train to his signatures, per Football Transfers.

The report indicates that Lilywhites have been vying for a move for the 26-year-old over a year and also reached a gentleman’s agreement with Eze and his representatives going into the summer transfer window. The agreement was subject to Daniel Levy meeting the £68m release clause in his current contract at Selhurst Park Stadium.

Football Transfers go on to acknowledge that while Eze had an agreement to join White Hart Lane, his heads turned when other elite clubs joined the race and asked the player to hold and access his options before taking a decision.

The player concluded the summer at Crystal Palace despite having been linked with a move away from N17. However, the transfer rumours linking him with a move to some of the most elite sides in Europe are expected to follow ahead of the 2025 window.

Premier League duo leads the race

The report specifically names Manchester City and Arsenal as the two clubs whose interest forced Eze to turn heads. And while the player was contemplating his future, Daniel Levy used the money kept aside to activate his release clause into signing Dominic Solanke.

They go on to claim that his move to Tottenham is now doubtful owing to City and Arsenal interest.

From the player’s perspective, it is understandable why he would prefer to stay put at Palace for yet another season if that

means he can join one of Manchester City or Arsenal, two of the most dominant teams in the Premier League.

Now for Tottenham and a prospect of Levy to put his hands on the table to land Eze highly depends on how Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski perform from the centre.
